Your looking at the turbos up top. The Manifold is at the bottom

Oh ok, so there's an exhaust outlet that isn't shown in your photos. That makes a lot of sense now.

Pretty serious stuff! Incredibly complex. It's kinda funny. "Let's build an engine whose main characteristics are small size and simplicity, and add a heavy, large, elaborate turbocharging setup to it." Seems to work well anyhow, especially this BNR setup.

It's overly engineered along with twice as many solenoids, vacuum lines, etc.

I don't think the sequential setup adds particularly to the weight, but it certainly is complex. History has shown that pneumatic operation is not the right way to do this, but I'd be interested to see if it would work with direct actuation.

I suspect the long-term answer is going to be a motor/generator attached to the CHRA like they're doing in F1 right now (MGU-H). Use battery power to spin the turbo up, then take power off the turbine shaft to recharge the battery once it's making boost instead of using a wastegate.

Still need an intercooler, tune, and maybe a mid-pipe. I'm pumped with the numbers...

Why post a dyno video with no numbers?

Enter suspense:

311hp

no torque numbers. Dyno was held for a meet and didn't have the equipment for a rotary. I am going to upgrade the fuel pump to a Supra tt running constant 12v to it. Then get a medium stock location intercooler.

What Irperformance indicated why my motor blew:

It was a complete rebuild with new housings and rotors from mazda individually. I have the receipt from the previous owner and the shop the built it in Sarasota.

Irperformance discovered that the Endplay was too loose because the rear spacer was grinder/sanded down and reused.

The Irons had too much heat and failed

The catalytic converter melted

The crank angle sensor was over sighted and the bracket was broken so it wasn't reading the trigger wheel accurately.

Ultimately the apex seal chipped from detonation.

If Irperformance wants to comment, please feel free to clarify even further.

The Oil Mixing Pump was heavily scored. Its being replaced with a new one.

The BNRs have minor chipping on the front turbine. They were built to withstand a apex seal shooting through them. BNR checked them out and confirmed that they are good to go and do not need a rebuild.

Damage notwithstanding, that engine is remarkably clean for a rotary. IDK about RX-7 circles, but I do know in RX-8 circles, it is recommended to inspect the cat frequently for any signs of clogging. It is also recommended to replace the ignition coils, wires, and plugs every 20K miles--more often if you frequently take advantage of the high redline. Generally speaking, a weak ignition system results in a clogged cat, which then kills the seals.

I LOVE your car, but reading this thread reminded me of why I can only own one rotary at a time.

Had a blast with the car at Deals Gap Rotary Rally. We had to replace the oil restrictors though because there is a lot of blow by in both the hot and cold side of the intercooler piping collecting around the silicone couplers. I'm monitoring the car to see if the new custom oil restrictor bolts that Irp made will help out. Fingers crossed.
