You know, having slept on it, I think the compression testing low was a correct result.

Poor compression would be one main reason you cant build a 1psi before 4500rpm. The car actually felt sluggish to me, especially off boost. Have you always had the slow spooling issue?

Or it could be the billion feet of elevation

It doesn't spool slowly. It's a 2871R on a lower comp build at 3200+ ft elevation without boost control.

The car seriously feels fine. I do not believe it lost 50 psi compression in every single cylinder yet idles better than ever and pulls hard at full boost without any smoke or oddness aside from bitty drops of oil in the coolant

Any chance theyve always been there from contamination or something. Flush the coolant and see if they show up again?

I mean, it's possible. I don't think it's likely though. Trying to remember the last time I burped this thing.... Pretty sure it was after my oil cooler install, maybe?

I didn't order the leakdown tester yet but I will.

FYI The test hose that threads into the spark plug hole is tucked in the bottom of the case on that tester. There's a big slip of paper that mentions that when you open the case. I didn't read the paper before looking over the contents and muttering expletives because of it's apparent absence.

Guys, I need help to make this happen for Dad. Set up a GoFundMe. Just no way to get this done before MRLS this year without some help. Anything y'all can contribute would be hugely appreciated.

Or... if anyone is looking for a good cheap 3/4 ton Chevy Gasoline/CNG dual fuel pickup... let me know.

GREAT NEWS! I have won a 2004 Mazdaspeed at auction, and now just need to get it from Tulsa, OK to southern Utah. Do we have any members near Tulsa that might be able to help me arrange a short tow?

Haha. I couldn't believe I won it. It's going to cost twice as much to get it here as it did to buy the silly thing.

But things are looking up. I sure hope the engine is good in it -- it was quite a hit. Car isn't even rollable. But it has the seats we want, and most of the other nice MSM goodies.

Alright, got back to working on my car.

Post coolant flush, I don't find any oil in the coolant. I must have just spilled some oil into the coolant feed while removing/reinstalling my turbo. derp.

Trying to track oil leaks. It seemed like the dipstick was leaking a lot, so I replaced the oring with one I found at Ace hardware. Something's still leaking a significant amount of oil though

I have also picked up a misfire issue. I logged it, I hope I'm doing this right. One of these is high boost, one is low boost. Misfired on both of them. Also on the low boost one it was doing this godawful high idle/misfire business. terrible.

God I'm such a noob. Halp?

Did you put in new spark plugs?

plugs looked great when I pulled them out like... 50 miles ago, so I did not replace them. I have no idea how to read that log, does it show a misfire? lol

If it was misfiring it wasn't a consistent miss based on what i'm seeing. Fuel looks safe. There are a couple leanish spikes (that seem to be correlated to a slight drop in boost) that seem weird to me as typically you would see a rich blip if its an ignition issue. I only looked under boost on the second log. Is it missing under vac / boost or everywhere?

You have it backwards. The sensor measures oxygen in the exhaust, not fuel. A misfire means there is a bunch of extra oxygen which will show a higher AFR(lean).

WTF, never got notified that y'all replied here.

@yank it misses only under boost. Whether high boost or low boost I get a miss.

I've put it on the back burner to tear down the auction car donor, but I really do need to be working on this as well. Any input would be super helpful, thanks guys.

Big update in Dad's thread: https://www.miataturbo.net/build-thr...2/#post1434665

I don't recall. As soon as I finish stripping dad's donor car and get started on the engine, I'll pull my plugs and have a look. Probably will just replace and re-gap. If that doesn't work i'll try swapping coils out.
