Pull up the parts list with prices for the hardtop and all parts from Mazda. Make sure the adjuster KNOWS that not all Miatas come with them, and that they're extra. Then challenge him to find one in that color for $250. Then let me know when he finds one, because i'll be on my way.

That all said... $10,300, is FAR more than i expected them to offer.

My suggestion: Hit them with the hardtop thing, try to get it to $11k, then suck it up. Yeah, it sucks that you might have to put out $3500 or so, but think of it this way: You'll be debt free, and you'll have a baller $3500 pile of parts just waiting to go on another Miata you pay cash for.

If you had receipts for all the parts, might be a different story.

I owe $12k, so that puts me $1700 in arrears. I also have to pay the $500 deductible. They estimate it'll be about 20% buyback, so another $2k to buy it back.... I'm going to have to come up with a chunk of change here.

Please feel free, anyone, to pitch in with more ideas about how to argue with them. I tried discussing with the adjuster, who simply pulled up a car for sale in Eugene ('04 MSM with 56k miles listed for $9900) saying mine is worth about the same as that one. Ugh.

Anyone want to buy a '99 Nissan Maxima?
No kidding, they considered the car a write-off, huh? I'm genuinely surprised; I thought it could be repaired. (Still do..)

So you're $4500 from paying it off and getting it back from the insurance company, plus the cost of a shell to transfer it all into, plus all of the incidental stuff that you're going to replace in the process? That's kind of a rough deal, I feel for you.

Were they even open to the idea of repairing the car? I don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but I'm assuming that could be accomplished for less than $10k, and more importantly, for only the $500 deductible out of your pocket. ****, I see rear clips being sent to body shops all the time.

You should just part it out and buy my Ti Gray V8 Miata.

Adjusters response sounds exactly right to me. I disagree with it of course, but that's exactly what I expected him to do/say. I doubt you'll get him to budge too much on that, but like concealer said at least try to push the value to 11 or something.

And Pinky that car is totally totalled.......

Andrew, where did your comment go?

YOU HAVE RECEIPTS?

Please share!! I'd love to slap a whole stack of receipts on them.

That hardtop price adjustment sounds absolutely ludicrous. I believe I got $750. They should give FMV for it since it is a factory OEM part.

Jeff, I completely agree.

I'm going to go back on them with everything, but for now I'm trying to get money together. I hadn't accounted for the fact that we'd have to pay $2k worth of my wife's tuition before mid-april, so suddenly I no longer have the necessary funds.

I think my hardtop is going up for sale.

I am a little late to the party on this, but I think that car can be fixed properly. To know for sure, I would have to see pics of the wheel well and inside the trunk.

When my car was new, it had damage worse than that, and I had it fixed. As long as the inner panels are not damaged to bad, It is not as time consuming as you might think.

Well, inside the trunk, near as I can tell, looks totally normal. I just am hesitant to spend money on this chassis because when I'm finished I'll still have a repaired, salvage-title car.

At this point my only concern is buying it back. It looks like I'll have no trouble selling my Maxima so I think I'll be good to go. Hardtop will be listed also.

But it will be paid off, right? And, it will still be a nice, fast turbo Miata that brings smiles to your face on every drive (so long as you can resist 4-wheeling).

Of course, you're a bit on the fickle side when it comes to cars.

all true.

I have a friend up here who has a good, cheap body guy who does good work. My hesitation is I don't know what's messed up underneath the car. I might get it put back together, do the body work, and find that there is more damage than previously detected or something.

Either way, what I'm going to do AFTER i get the car back is up in the air. Gotta get over that first hurdle.

I walk by my car a couple times a day. I finally had my perfect car and I destroyed it.

For me it is always that nagging feeling in the back of my head that something may be wrong with the car. I couldn't be 100% happy with the car knowing something structural may be a problem in the background. But, knowing me, I may just be the exception to normal thinking...

Also, at least you destroyed you own car. Rather than have it violated by a thief. Small comforts.

Jeff, I will not allow myself to be compared to you.

I still need to hang on to a shred of self esteem. I'm not looking forward to documenting my progress once I start the rebuild because it'll be inevitably compared to you. I'm going to pretend your build doesn't exist.

(Vlad is right. And I feel the same way. I am fickle and picky, but not as thorough as you, Jeff.)

I don't think anyone seriously compares a build thread to mine. Maybe jokingly, bit I think most will agree not many have the time nor patience to be as stupid as I am when building a car. I reread my build thread at times and shake my head at my own craziness.

I think you should just compare it to mine when you think about being lazy and not cleaning something. no excuse not to clean!

/facepalm that was purely masturbation on my part. Everything else was so perfect under the car though! It was the elephant under the car!

All I want to do is tear into this car already. Sort out the suspension so it runs and drives, then tackle the quarter panel and fender. What happened to the bumper? Damage? Repairable?
