look at the tune and list the i/o's and see what VVT output is used for.

I typically reserve it for alternator control PWM.

What should I do for a stereo head unit? I had planned to use the bose but I'm not so sure now. I don't care about CD's, but I would like an AUX input. Still want decent sound though

Thoughts? Doesn't HAVE to happen now, but hey, while I'm at work I can talk and think and hit the buy now button on things

Why do you need a HU? Just stick an amp somewhere and put a 3.5mm jack somewhere in the dash.

Maybe if I understood how that works. I has the dumb. I will do some reading. I have a little Polk amp that's compact and would work perfect. I even have a little removable subwoofer.

^removes A/C for simplicity and weight savings; throws subwoofer in the trunk

It's an NB1 Bose unit, right? You can repurpose the cassette deck input as an aux. All you need is a switch, a resistor, and a mini-jack headphone cable.

The sound isn't anything amazing, but it's good enough to hear with the top down and it keeps a nice low profile because it looks stock.

Nope, NB2 Bose from the Mazdaspeed. I really like the idea of just a simple aux input, an amp, and speakers. I think Josh is running something similar, going to ping him on it.

I would never re-install the giant archaic msm bose system. It's heavy, takes up lots of space, and mediocre at best.

Once you go bluetooth, you'll never want a 3.5mm aux port again.

I drive new cars all the time and love bluetooth in them, but I don't need the complexity in the Miata. A simple aux port will do me just fine.

Enh. Streaming audio from a phone in the car kinda sucks, IMHO. Touchscreen UIs for selecting what song to listen to are terrible to use while driving, and it burns the battery down pretty badly as well.

Ideally I want to be able to use physical controls on the head unit to select the music. For the Miata I use an old iPod Nano and a 3.5mm audio cable, because at least the iPod has buttons I can feel without looking at them.

^this is true, touch screens are the most dangerous UI possible for use while driving. So frustrating that many new cars have at least one of them on board.

But using AUX input doesn't solve that problem, and I think that's all he was after. That being said, if you have bluetooth streaming audio, the head unit will at least have play, pause, and prev/next buttons which will control the audio on the phone. With an AUX input, you must control absolutely all of it on the phone.

But I'm prepared to do that. Not a huge deal, I usually just use Pandora so all I have to do is hit the skip button occasionally.

Anyway, I've decided what I'm doing radio-wise. So if anyone wants the stock MSM bose head unit, let me know.

I ordered the NACA vent windows and power steering plugs just now.

Can't wait to get home tonight to tinker with it some more.

It doesn't solve the problem by itself, no, but since smartphones and tablets (which are pretty much all touchscreen) are the only things I've seen that do bluetooth audio streaming, AUX input becomes necessary-but-not-sufficient if you want an external player with physical controls.

Best is a head unit that can read the files directly, either with a flash card or a USB port for the phone.

As for the MSM Bose unit, I agree. The NB1 Bose unit is different.

I agree, and if this were a daily driven car I would probably do that. But it isn't. This little amp player like what Josh is using will work very nicely. Now I just need to order it and get some kind of panel to fill the hole.

I'm after a VICS manifold if anyone has one. Pretty please. Squaretop is too $$ but I don't want this VTCS business anymore.
