Default Rotrex Built Engine NB! Come at me bro!

Hey everyone,
Getting bored with CR.net's lack of appreciation for building engines or doing anything mechanical so I'm bringing my build thread over here!

I am currently mid-engine build, my first time cracking open an engine, and its going quite well. Should be finishing up the bottom end by January, then its on to the headwork.

Engine will be going Rotrex, I know... ... but I've had some opportunities come up that make this the right choice for me. This isn't going to just be a bolt on kit off the shelf and call it a day. I plan on fully maximizing the power strategically in the kit by changing up pulleys, blower sizes, and restrictor plates. The rest you'll have to wait for.

Step 1: Bought a VVT Engine from Alex of 2nd Chance Roadster; low mileage but low compression on #3

Step 2: Crack it in half!

Step 3: I cleaned up the block and oil pan really well and then had to wait for my pistons. In the meantime I had my crank freshened up with a regrind, deep cleaning, and polish.

Step 4: After getting my pistons (I went with Wiseco 84mm 10.5:1 compression forged pistons) I took it upon myself to perfectly balance them. I got them all within .001g of each other

That's all for now, Here's a few pictures of the POS the engine will be going in. Car is in such rough form still, nailing down the exterior while I build the motor!

Let me know what you think so far!
-Griffin

I despise the sticker on the windshield. Other than that, I think it will look cool when done. Buy a hardtop and get real wheels and tires.

You're going to like the Rotrex. 10.5:1 should be fine on CA91 with a conservative tune. With race gas you should be able to reach MBT. New intercooled production kit or a used gen I kit ?

That's the plan so far. I'd like to be able to run 91 and have another tune for e85 if I chose to go down that route. New production kit will be used with a larger rotrex most likely. Going to be working with Bryan at KW to nail down what will be optimum for this setup with the new kit.

I dont care if someone thinks my car looks cool or is in style, I used to, but I'm more evolved as a car-tuner now. So CR.nets "Clean car" "looks dope" "mad fresh yo" got old. I want people talking about "sawzalls" and putting "all of the boost" now!

what's so magical about a rotrex that you can run 10.5:1 compression on shitty gas?

WHATEVER THEN! lol from the picture they look narrow, but you are right about the flares. They make them look like 6" wheels.

Rotrex subhuman race checking in

Please, for the love of $DEITY, take some REALLY GOOD PICTURES OF THE MOUNTING SYSTEM ON THE GEN2 KIT! I need to see if its worth trying to retrofit my Gen1 with the new mounting system. So far, you are the first person I've seen who claims to be going for the Gen2.

I like this talk. I'm running stock 9.5:1 and was really hoping to go 10:1 when I finally get around to building a block. Has anyone done any really good tuning with a Rotrex on a BP and actually documented it? Everyone says "yeah, its great" but I've seen very little documentation.

He's not running the program, is he? He seemed more like a support desk guy with no answers whenever I spoke to him. Don't get me wrong, he seems like a nice enough guy, and he did help me out a bit, but he never seemed to have the authority to do anything or share any information.

I'll have to talk to the guys at Skunk2 about that, dont want to get on bad terms with someone turning out some great miata parts I'll do my best to get you what you need though.

Aren't tunes considered somewhat of a guarded secret when theres money to be made off a population of pioneering individuals? Thats all the fun of being the first one to jump on something like this!

I don't believe Bryan is running the program but I do know he is careful about what he does and doesn't say. He's got a lot of know-how but you have to understand that when you're a company representative you're not only putting your reputation on the line as far as claims or accuracy but also the entire company's. He's an awesome guy who knows whats up. That is all I will say about anyone at Skunk/Kraftwerks or anything going on with them. Too many lawsuits have gone on in the import world

I understand all this, but there is a huge difference between "industry secrets" and "covering you ***" and "keeping your customers in the dark and not offering support." Talking to Brian/Bryan is sometimes like talking to a career politician. KW/S2 would probably have a LOT better reputation with even just SLIGHTLY more transparency. Its not like they have a lot of competition in the Rotrex OR Miata markets.

Right, and I dont have any idea what your personal experience is, all I know is Brian is a smart guy who's really helpful, I'd be happy to help you get the answers you need my fellow rotrex miata brethren

and I guess what I was getting at was Brian is a good guy, I can't speak for Skunk's management however
