That's not the source of your noise, though it does seem to have more play than it should.

This one is coming out, probably starting today, it shouldn't be that big of a job. Everything is fresh and has never-seize on it. I have never messed with a diff, so i'm unsure if it's something i want to attack myself or not. I may crack it open just to see if i can find anything.
No problem. Yeah the MSM diff needs axles, I have those too though.

If you crack it open, you can put gear compound on the gears to check the pattern (easy to do, there are youtube vids of how to do it) and if you happen to have a dial indicator with a magnetic base, you can easily check the backlash. Those two things would confirm if there's an obvious problem with the diff.

Sounds like someone had it apart. WAY too much backlash. If you're lucky, that's all it needs.

Just picked up the diff from the gear guy. He said it had to much backlash and everything else looked good.
He said it was good to go now. We'll see.

I've got a crap load of work that needs to be done on the boat so this thing is going to wait for a rainy day.

Hope it goes well this time around.

From what I could tell in your previous video the new R&P gearing seemed really good despite the noise. Just makes me want a set even more for myself.

Anyone else want to take a turn railing me in the ***?

On a related *** note.

Hot damn that *** looks good.

On the plus side to all this. I can remove and reinstall a rear differential out of a 94 miata in about 1 hour.

****.

So what gives? A trusted driveline shop looked at it and said you should be fine. It seems to me that the cause of a whine that loud should be pretty obvious to someone who knows what they're doing when they look inside.

We'll see what gives at 8am tomorrow when they open up.

Hopefully they'll "give" me my money back.

So, took it up there first thing this morning. The guy was adamant the howl will never go away due to it being used with to much backlash before i got it. (which is totally true, it could have been used on the K powered car i bought it from)
I took it back home, took it back out again. He tore it down and we went over the numbers. According to what i see on the internet they are pretty close.

So here's the plan. I ordered the MSM 4.10 off Pat. I'm going to use that until i can find the time to go through this thing myself. Part of me thinks that it will always have the howl around 40-50mph. I ordered some thicker fluid to try as well.

Really, i have the boat to work on first. This thing could sit for a while. I'm sick of laying under it.

Still sucks. Not as bad as what you've got going on.
Assuming this is the one I gave you? If so I apologize. I thought you said you were planning on just using the Torsen out of it like I was planning to do before I sold it.

I'll get over it lol. My fault for not looking closer. I would have probably worked out a cash price rather than trade if i knew what i was looking at.

FWIW, i also wasn't planning on turbo at that point, so all kinds of stuff was up in the air. We'll swap beers sometime and call it good. You going to be at Putnam next weekend?

Sounds like a plan. I probably owe you a few beers. I'm gonna be busy most of that weekend but may try to swing by on Sunday and bum some ride alongs.

On the rear, it looks to me that, if those tires are directional, they are on backwards.

You are absolutely correct. I have been trying all sorts of stuff to find the issue. I flopped tires early on and never flopped them back.

Got this thing out and torn apart. Im getting good at it now. Down to about an hour taking my time.
so it looks like this thing is way out.
Spec calls for .0034 - .0045 or something. Im at like .015 lol. 3 thousands seems like a small amount but I'll trust it. .003 is so small im not even sure this crappy indicator can pick it up.

also this stupid cap came off. Looks and feels like peanut butter.
