Just as a side note, crimes against children like this are the most heinous thing an adult can do in my mind. As someone with two kids, the footage of the child being abducted is downright terrifying and enraging. I hope whoever gets caught truly suffers for the rest of eternity.

45% out of a sample size of ~ 100 children at a single hospital specialist hospital weren't hospitalized solely due to COVID. Mainly because of database/entry/mining issues according to the authors. The other 60% were, and of those, 20% had MIS-C, an extremely serious, life-threatening illness. In another study, also at a single hospital, 55% of 146 patients that were hospitalized and PCR positive (EXCLUDING those with MIS-C who would make up ~10% of the sample size) were sick primarily due to COVID.
So clearly the evidence is there to extrapolate from a sample size of n<300 between both studies to the entirety of the USA. Heck why not just apply the same logic to the whole world? I mean 40% and 45% are pretty similar that proves it right??

I haven't seen anyone argue other than Jared Kushner against better reporting, this is a huge issue globally in terms of both over- and under-counting various metrics, but the real problem red hearing here in my mind is the portion of the population 100x more willing to trust the reporting of GlennBeck . com over peer reviewed literature and the CDC.

It's the onus of the person providing the information or claim to prove it's validity, not the other way around.
For people asking “could this also apply to adult hospitalization counts or death totals,” the authors of the study say that yes, the same problems could affect other counts that rely on hospital electronic databases. They’re calling for more reviews of the data.
In addition to the 40% of “COVID patients” who were in the hospital for non-COVID reasons, another 47% were in the hospital for unrelated conditions that have similar symptoms to the coronavirus. To be conservative, they were not included in the 40% figure.
But if they had been included, fully 87% of children who were counted as coronavirus hospitalizations were not actually in the hospital for coronavirus.

Two studies published today have found that the number of pandemic-related hospitalizations may have been dramatically over-inflated.
Researchers looked at data from several children’s hospitals, including the fifth-largest in the nation, and concluded that 40% of childhood hospitalizations attributed to the virus had nothing to do with it.
The findings may have wide-ranging implications on other pandemic-related counts and statistics.
The first study looked at the fifth-largest children’s hospital in the country. It found that 58 out of the 146 positive test results (40%) in children were “incidental” in nature, meaning they had nothing to do with why the child was in the hospital. These were children who were in the hospital for fractures, surgeries, cancer treatment, etc. Yet they were nonetheless included in the pandemic hospitalization totals.
The second study looked at a children’s hospital in Northern California. It found that 53 of the 117 positive test results (45%) were in children who were in the hospital for other reasons. These cases were also nonetheless included in the pandemic totals.
The authors, Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious-diseases specialist, and Dr. Amy Beck, a professor of pediatrics, say the reason for the problem is that pandemic statistics are being taken from hospital databases that were only meant to be used for administrative purposes such as billing. “They were not designed to infer the prevalence and severity of an infectious virus.”
They say that their findings “underscore the importance of clearly distinguishing between children hospitalized with [the virus] versus those hospitalized for the disease.”
“It is critical that the risks to children be portrayed accurately,” Gandhi and Beck wrote. “Scientific and media reports that inaccurately portray the risk to children can do harm by alarming parents and providing justification for ongoing restrictions to in-person education and other programming.”
The inflated data continues to affect public perceptions and influence policies on schools, sports, and camp.
The authors also say that the issues they discovered may affect adult hospitalization rates and mortality numbers as well, and said reviews of the pandemic totals “will likely reveal the same findings across the country.”
