I heard a theory that people who are "professional gamblers" are actually involved in drug running or other criminal activities and use gambling as a way to launder money. Rumors say that he mostly played video poker wagering hundreds of dollars per hand. I've never heard of anyone getting rich playing video poker.

I'm not a gambler but aren't there IRS rules about how much you can "win" before the casinos need to actually report those earnings? How would you launder that much money in 1yr unless the casinos were part of the deal?

Google:
Casinos, racetracks and other gambling operators are required to document winnings once they reach a certain threshold. With slot machines and bingo, for example, casinos report any single payout of $1,200 or more to the IRS. For keno, it's $1,500 and $5,000 for poker tournaments.
Curious...

Gun ownership has skyrocketed while gun homicides (and violent crime in general) have fallen.

Yeah exactly, you fill out a 1099 and then the winnings become legal income. The casino doesn't track how much you actually bet, so you can write in whatever number you need to to make it seem like you aren't bidding more than your other legal income would support and the conclusion the IRS is forced to draw is just that you're luckier than the rest. At least this is according to the theory I heard, from one of Scott Adams' videos.

I can see how it’d be easy to launder money that way... Gee I “won” $5m but had to wager $5.1m sir [wink wink...] Sounds like the IRS, usually pretty keen on getting paid wouldn’t have figured that out.

We’ll call it the “casino loophole”

Gun ownership has skyrocketed while gun homicides (and violent crime in general) have fallen.
Now, violent crime as such has been on a decline since the 90's, rising again in 2015, but not nearly to the levels of the 90's.
When you look at the numbers for cases with fatal outcome, guns are involved in about 70% of those. Reasonable, since guns are made to kill people.
i.e. you are less likely to get into trouble. If there is causality with gun ownership, well, that will be interpreted in all the ways that suit the different camps, if you get into trouble though, you are more likely to get shot and killed.

But the (western) European average seems to be about 1.5/100000, ranging from <1 to 2. I'm taking the liberty to exclude the baltic countries bordering russia from this. The mentality of never backing down is strong there.
The US mainland has 4.88/100k.

Local reports have him providing rooms to visitors that had been provided to him for free because of his high roller status. They suggest that another of the perks was call girls provided. The latter may account for a 'foreign' charger, especially if one of them saw something they shouldn't have, or been ill-treated, and left in a hurry. Probably not too keen on coming forward either, given the subsequent events.

PSA in case some of you are still running Kaspersky Lab software. Interesting article yesterday all pointing to "holes" in the software. Intentional or not?

this is want liberals want in Obamacare:

NHS provokes fury with indefinite surgery ban for smokers and obese

NHS will ban patients from surgery indefinitely unless they lose weight or quit smoking, under controversial plans drawn up in Hertfordshire. The restrictions - thought to be the most extreme yet to be introduced by health services - immediately came under attack from the Royal College of Surgeons.

Its vice president called for an “urgent rethink” of policies which he said were “discriminatory” and went against the fundamental principles of the NHS.
of course the will freely pay* for 6 year olds to chop off their penises.

#bantheNRA

A federal jury has found a Boston man guilty of conspiracy to commit terrorism and of supporting the Islamic State over a 2015 plot to behead conservative Pamela Geller.

On Wednesday, jurors found David Wright guilty of five criminal charges, including planning to behead Geller. He could face up to life in prison.

The plot was hatched when Wright, his uncle Usamaah Abdullah Rahim and Nicolas Rovinski became upset over Geller organizing a “Draw Mohammad” contest in Garland, Texas in 2015.

#get berned

“Do you really believe the wealthiest family in America should get a tax break of up to $50 billion, that the Koch brothers should get a tax break of $30 billion? You think that makes sense?”

“I did say all Americans.”

“Well, do you think the wealthy should not get tax breaks?”

“I did say all Americans.”

Well, I happen not to believe that the Koch brothers need a tax break.”
the leftist platform ladies and gentlemen: jealousy.

Are you certain that a memorial in the shape of a cross is not a symbolic reference to the Christian religion?

so what if it is?

what specific law respecting an establishment of religion does the erection of a Celtic cross in 1925 at a cemetery decree? and does it rhyme with hunting rifle?

Meanwhile, there's literally the words "in god we trust" above every vote in Congress...

Trans Man Allegedly Raped Girl In Bathroom | The Daily Caller

A Wyoming man who identifies as a transgender woman is on trial for allegedly sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl in a bathroom.

The trial for Miguel Martinez, who goes by the name Michelle, began on Monday, the Billings Gazette reported. Martinez allegedly invited the young girl into the bathroom with him where he allegedly fondled the girl’s breasts and genitalia, before penetrating her. The girl told police that “it hurt inside” and she started to cry, the Casper Star Tribune reported.
