Students wear white pins to remind them of white privilege - The College Fix

Students at Elizabethtown College this month are wearing white pins in the shape of puzzle pieces to remind them of their white privilege.

The campaign was launched over the weekend by the Elizabethtown College Democrats, who say it aims to make students at the small and private liberal arts college in Pennsylvania more introspective about issues of race, especially in their predominantly white region of Lancaster County.

“Discussions about race are often perceived as being only open to people of color, but I think it is just as important for white people to partake in conversations about race,” Aileen Ida, president of the College Democrats, told The College Fix via email.

Ida said white people are continually allowing for a societal system of oppression to occur unless they work against it. The white puzzle piece pin represents racial struggles of all sorts.

“No matter how accepting someone is, that doesn’t stop them from being part of a system based on centuries of inequality,” she said, adding the campaign transcends politics.

i think the best comment so far is:

I am wearing a Star Trek pin, to me a reminder of warp speed, transporters, and Klingons. I join with these students in empty symbolism to remember things that do not exist.

I love the term "decimate" at least historically.

We use it to as a synonym for destroy when the historical truth is so much worse.

A cohort (roughly 480 soldiers) selected for punishment by decimation was divided into groups of ten. Each group drew lots (sortition), and the soldier on whom the lot fell was executed by his nine comrades, often by stoning or clubbing. The remaining soldiers were often given rations of barley instead of wheat (the latter being the standard soldier's diet) for a few days, and required to camp outside the fortified security of the camp.[3]

Because the punishment fell by lot, all soldiers in a group sentenced to decimation were potentially liable for execution, regardless of individual degrees of fault, rank, or distinction.

Another bit of trivia that has fascinated me was the amount of life snuffed out during the age of Genghis Khan.
Genghis Khan has been branded the greenest invader in history - after his murderous conquests killed so many people that huge swathes of cultivated land returned to forest.

The Mongol leader, who established a vast empire between the 13th and 14th centuries, helped remove nearly 700million tons of carbon from the atmosphere, claims a new study.

The deaths of 40million people meant that large areas of cultivated land grew thick once again with trees, which absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

And, although his methods may be difficult for environmentalists to accept, ecologists believe it may be the first ever case of successful manmade global cooling.

So Stalin was an environmentalist? An absolute model leader of the left.

Unfortunately the free period for these episodes of Hardcore History by Dan Carlin has passed, but if you are interested in history and a ******* fantastic history podcast I highly recommend listening (and in this case buying).

Hardcore History ? Wrath of the Khans Series
(almost eight and a half hours of history)

For the episodes that are still free:
Hardcore History 59 The Destroyer of Worlds

You can subscribe via your favorite Podcast player.

Also when people say "completely destroyed."

Because they don't understand the difference between damaged and destroyed.

And everything Genghis Kahn didn't kill, he banged. You have something like a 0.5% chance of being related to him.

Dan Carlin is absolutely fantastic, but those podcasts are insanely long. Like I don't have 25 ******* hours to listen to blueprint for Armageddon.

Actually, the same goes for the phrase "shut down," as in "This lady absolutely shut down a group of trolls."

Invariably, it goes like this: A person who is fat posts a picture of herself wearing a bikini or skimpy outfit. Some trolls come along and reply that she really should not be wearing these clothes in public. The original poster then responds with more, similar pictures of herself stuffed into a bikini, with something about how she's proud of her body and nobody can tell her what to wear, followed by a bunch of other people saying "Right on," and "You're beautiful, girl!"

Now, I have no problem with someone responding to their critics. And it's not my place to judge what you're proud of or how you express that. Your body, your speech, your business. But this hardly constitutes "shutting them down." To claim as much crosses a certain logical line.

An example of someone being (verbally) Shut Down would be as follows:

Person A posts something on the internet about how immigrants are a danger to American society, and want to rape all of our women.

Person B does a bit of light googling, and then responds with "Wait a minute, you were born in the US, and didn't you serve 9 years in prison for raping a 15 year old girl who went to your church?"

-or-

Person A posts something inflammatory about how all [members of political party they oppose] are corrupt, thieves, liars, etc.

Person B, who knows person A, replies "Dude, you declared bankruptcy in order to get out from under your upside-down mortgage for the third home you bought for $450,000 as a speculative investment with a zero-down, interest-only mortgage during the height of the bubble despite only earning $60,000 a year and having zero liquid assets (a fact which you tried to conceal from your wife, without whose knowledge you bought the house), then, after she divorced you when she caught you sleeping with another man, you declared bankruptcy again to try to avoid paying alimony, except when you found out it doesn't work that way, you then proceeded to embezzle nearly $100,000 from your father's company, and only plead guilty to that in order to avoid indictment for fraud resulting from the pyramid scheme you tried to get people to buy into. You're hardly one to be making accusations."

Those are shut-downs.

"I can wear what I want" is the sort of thing that a defiant 8 year old says to their beleaguered parent.

UC San Diego Students Protest 'Oppressive' Dalai Lama Visit | Heat Street

Students at the University of California, San Diego are protesting an upcoming visit by the Dalai Lama – claiming the Tibetan leader is “oppressive”.

Chinese students are leading objections to the event, which will see the Dalai Lama give a commencement speech on graduation day.

They have claimed that his presence is offensive because of his campaign to make Tibet more independent – contrary to the Communist government’s position that Tibet is a region of China under their control.

Sometimes, I wish I had a time machine.

I'd love to go back to UC Berkeley in 1964 or 65, pick up a bunch of students, and bring them forward to UC Berkeley in the present day.

I could sell tickets to that event.

This is pretty much an advertisement for western liberal democracy...
They're against this because they believe in an authoritarian regime. But good lord is that hilarious.

It's funny, I'm going to school right now in San Jose. My General Pathology teacher graduated UC Berkeley in...1971, I think? He proudly describes it, at that time, as, "The birth of the free speech movement." He still lives in Berkeley.

He is a crotchety old contrarian, and he decided to "attend" the recent riots. He wanted to see it for himself. He described it in class - the vandalism, the assaults. He said that three masked youths were running by holding clubs, and they spotted him, stopped, pointed, and said, "We know who you voted for." He believed that they were going to beat him, but something scared them and they ran on. This is a little bald Jewish man in his late sixties.

I asked him what his takeaway from the event was. He just shrugged and said, "It was the death of free speech." I'm not sure if he was referring to the movement on campus, or in general.
