Yeah if i'm just doing a clutch/flywheel/rms, i'm with Andrew. I'm all about getting the unpleasantness done as fast as possible rather than having a slightly better time across twice as long.

Maybe if you've got a lift (and a tranny jack) I can see doing it from below being preferable. But I swear, I will never pull another Miata transmission from below using jackstands.
Doing the whole assembly seems worse if you don't have a concrete floor. Trying to move our engine crane through the sand when it's loaded sucks, need two guys to move the crane and one to hold the engine to stop it from swinging around.

Much like the men who built the Panama Canal, I prefer to use machines to do the heavy work for me.
And, in all seriousness, my body is starting to really show the effects of how little respect I gave it in my 20s and 30s. Two herniated lumbar discs, my left knee is doing something weird and scary, the little finger on my right hand doesn't quite work properly (and several other fingers aren't quite straight and can't fully close), When I wear a shoulder-belt while sitting on the right side of a car, it perfectly rubs against the spot where my right collarbone healed at an angle, etc.
EDIT: I just measured my hands, for the purpose of ordering a new set of gloves. The middle finger on my right hand is .25" shorter than the one on my left hand. And while this is the first time I've really noticed it, I know exactly why that is. If I could go back 20 years and not be an idiot, they'd both be the same length.

Meanwhile, I stand with the engine crane.
Let me know when you've managed to cram one of those, plus all 6'2" and 190lbs of yourself, plus three stacked 1/2" socket extensions and universal joints, into the space between the bottom of an NA and the top of your garage floor, with only Harbor Freight's Finest™ jackstands (and Home Depot's Finest™ cement blocks) in between.

But, I have helped someone do an S2000 clutch on jackstands and it fit just fine.

I use it on Qmax-equipped cars because that's harder. Otherwise chest press and 5-10 minutes of swearing to get it splined.
The trans jack 404 linked above is the one you need. If your shitty jackstands aren't giving you enough room, get the HF 12 ton jack stands. If you can't get your trans out with 30" of clearance, you probably shouldn't be doing this kind of work yourself anyway.

I have a pretty good idea how to build a turbo car but there is always more to learn and every time I post on here I wonder if I am gonna get torn to pieces. This site is a scary place sometimes, there are reminders of what not to do everywhere lol.
You should read only for a solid year before you post here. Just remember, when people rip on you, it's because they care.
