No thats not it, not even close. It's all in the shielding gas. Without shielding gas the metal will oxidize rapidly before it has time to cool. This causes the welds to become porous and weak.
As far as the sch40 question, sch40 is nothing but a measurement of pipe THICKNESS, nothing to do with ID.

I would make the argument that with fluxcore you're are not injecting cold temperatures (the gas shield onto the weld) and that you can maintain hotter tempers and therefore better penetration. If you are getting pitting in the welds its a user error.

all this talk over one mani, come on guys give the guy credit where he deserves and let him find out what works and what does not. i got a similar design and it does the job for now until someone comes up with the ultimate flowing design, by the way anyone done this yet? i am looking to upgrade next year and would like to build the best flowing mani. any pictures? i am open for any new ideas, i need a new project.

lol... I wonder why this never came up in all the other DIY welding threads.
As far as my welder, it's a Hobart that can be converted to gas shield, so later as my budget allows, I'll do that. But for now it is what it is, and does a good job. I'll most likely just wait until I get my own house instead of having to go over to my folk's house so I can wire the garage 240v and get a more robust welder (and a better compressor too).
