Some of the pricing is up!

When are you shooting for the group buy? April?

Chilicharger665 02-20-2014 12:09 AM

3k for half the parts needed so far, not including the engine, accessories, or ECU...

TorqueZombie 02-20-2014 12:17 AM

Even fudging up the math and guessing at the TBD stuff about 5K isn't bad. Compared to a built motor and new turbo stuff this might become an option. K series aren't Miata cheap, but hey aren't as bad as some think. Quick ebay came back with a lot sub$2k pricing
k24a2 engine | eBay

I can't tell you which series is more awesome than another, just a quick search and I have a Honda buddy who knows these things.

18psi 02-20-2014 12:20 AM

There are other things mentioned that are not included in the pricing or the donor engine. But yeah it still should be in the 6k-8k range at the most.

I'm just waiting for the 1st one of these with a giant snail strapped to it :giggle:

natedawg 02-20-2014 12:35 AM

I hope he does a full package with some sort of discount beyond the group buy. That would be nice but probably won't happen. i guess we'll see.

K24a2's can be had for $800-1200 if you look hard enough. But you really want an 06+ engine. The 04s I know had oil control ring issues and burn nice amounts of oil.

Chilicharger665 02-20-2014 12:45 AM

The header will easily be 1k if the flywheel is $900. Motor mounts probably $500. Oil system definitely 1k. Now you still need the new engine accessories, harnesses, ECU, header back exhaust, intake, radiator mods, and probably an oil cooler set up if you intend to track heavily. 2k for a good engine as well.

Chilicharger665 02-20-2014 12:49 AM

Holy crap am I excited at the location of that oil filter, though!

Lots of speculation here, so let me clear up some things.

All parts listed on Home right now will be available as a package for under $5000 shipped, including oiling setup and the header.

I've bought 2 k24a2s since 2009. They cost $1200, $1000, and $900. It's very safe to budget $1000-$1500 for a healthy motor.

I'm estimating the average enthusiast can do this full conversion, including Kpro, for around $8000, depending on specifics. Compare that to the cost of a reliable turbo setup for track duty, or an N/A BP build, and you'll see the value in this swap.

edit: as far as the group buy, I am shooting for April. Header will probably be a couple months after.

I think the only question at this point is: What transmission do you use on a 1000whp turbo 4 cylinder Miata?

TKO600.

Naw, you would just keep feeding it 5 speeds until you used up all of them.

Fireindc 02-20-2014 10:20 AM

I think the pricing is more than fair. For us street car guys, the BP turbo route will still be the go-to method for cheap power; BUT for a dedicated track rat i don't know if you will be able to beat 200whp n/a, honda reliable, 8krpm all day, and the weight savings you will gain with the swap. Yum.

Sequential dogbox. If you can pony up the amount to get a reliable 1k horses, you can do the sequential tranny:dealwithit:

Thinking about doing this for my next swap project as soon as my SAAB is done. Found the car already. Just need to pull the trigger and stash it for a couple of months.

Hugh?

You can get a complete Type S oil pump setup for about 250 if you do a Google search. Cheaper off ebay.

Edit: And the oiling is included now!? Sweet. Still need the Type S pump, but not the pickup stuff.

Yes, I am a speculating dick, because I have specifically avoided adding costs in my head until this was finally ready to come out, so I could avoid disappointment if this was vaporware.

However, now that you have clarified the pricing, then you are correct that it compares very favorably to a track reliable turbo miata, so I am genuinely excited now. It will be late this year before I can afford this, though.

Chilicharger665 02-20-2014 01:16 PM

Oh, does the factory undertray not fit anymore? Or does that go out the door with any new tubular subframe?

Yes, I know the basic 1.8 is cheaper.

But it will be interesting to see how another thousand RPM allows the K24 car to use gearing more effectively. 5 or 6 speed on either car.

I bet its closer than one most are thinking. And the whole not-having-to-source-badass-hot-side-parts-to-keep-it-together-on-long-track-stints has be tempting for a fairly substantial contingent of people here. Imagine Crusher with a K24. Jesus. Lots of classes where that's not OK, but still.

Since I'm local I'll gladly volunteer my 210whp miata agains this beast. :vash2:

Ahh the internet. Letting sub 100WHP schmuks like me attempt to instigate races involving other people's rides from afar across 3 decades.

You're not a dick, hope my post didn't come off that way. I meant that EVERYONE was speculating and I wanted to share new info I had.

Hopefully we can do some business later this year :)
