Default Moderators, what does the bullshit brigade say about this?

I'm not the guy asking questions, this was sent to me as a screenshot over FB

I'm at least gathering that stock rods are not being used, that was my first concern. Now that's out of the way....

In the words of the great Freddie Mercury: Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?

School me, please!

Stock pistons and rings, untouched block, with aftermarket rods here. Twice now I've halfassed everything, no machine shop, not measured anything, torqued all bolts by feel, reused old rings/bearings and the engine has run great. Every time I try to do it the "right way" I end up blowing the motor under 1000 miles.

I'm certainly not anywhere close to 600whp, but I don't doubt that it would be possible, at least for a little while.

I really struggle to see where the reliability fits into those claims in the photo

And perhaps the confidence of building it "right" led to harder driving? I can see where factory parts might fair well for you, lots of margin for error when machining things out of spec.

Did anyone ever put together a ZM-DE in a Miata? I can find a few threads about it that are a few years old, but no closure.
