The final reveal leading up to the launch of Team Fortress 2′s co-op vs homicidal robots mode, Mann vs Machine, gives us a glimpse at a clockwork armful of new achievements, and details how you’ll be able to earn some epic, new cosmetic items. For a small fee.

The big reveal here is the new “Mann Up Mode,” which will pit you against the mechanical hordes on an “Official Mann Co.” server with a chance to earn the new rewards, which largely seem to run along the theme of strapping broken robot parts to yourself and your guns. To be eligible for these (cosmetic only) drops, you’ll need to buy Tour of Duty tickets for 99 cents each. Each ticket will allow you to complete a mission toward completing a Tour of Duty badge: a new item that levels up with you and grants you a random rare every time you level it up. Each level of your Tour of Duty badge will require you to complete a set of fixed MvM missions, at the cost of one ticket each. Tickets are only expended on a victory, so succumbing to horrible, metal death won’t “eat your quarters” like the arcade games of yore.

Also available for $2 are Squad Surplus Vouchers, expended at the end of any given (successful) mission in MvM that give everyone on your team an item drop. If you’re rolling with a full team of six that each bought one, you’re all getting six drops if you win.

All of this aside, Mann Up mode can be completely ignored. You can still play MvM on non-Mann Co. servers and earn random drops over time, just like in TF2′s competitive modes. All you’ll be missing out on are chances at the new cosmetic gear and leveling up your Tour of Duty badge. You can read more in the official FAQ. We’re still sorely lacking in an ETA for Mann vs Machine beyond “Today,” so keep an eye out. The machines should be marching soon, and we plan to meet them. With bullets.

So here's the dealio. The server update is huge and the pipe is slow. I am leaving it on over night, going to work, and remoting into my server in the morning to flip it on for you guys.

What I need to know is what map rotation you guys prefer AND if you prefer I lock the server to only rotate MvM maps for the time being?

Map rotation is set to MvM maps only, 35 minutes or 5 wins will rotate the map.

Can be entered either through the steam client in the favorites tab or console. Hopefully people wont somehow magically find this thread and trash the server. This should be used exclusively by MT members. If I find people who do not belong I will have to add authentication to only allow MT member users.

Server seems to be working. Jeff Man and some other person were on it earlier. Not sure if the person was from here. I will wait for him to check in with the outcome of that match. Monitoring the console I was under the impression they could not start the game until the room was full. I could be wrong though.

Otherwise, how about tonight at 10?

All I have to say is holy fuck, that was FUN. That's the most fun I've had in TF2 I think!

I may end up buying a few of the steam store ticket things for it just to show support for how much I like this co-op.

Server shows 24/24. It's counting bots as players. You may need to set maxplayer 32 as when I made a server I freaked out till I did that.

There should be some kind of difficulty scaling based on # of players, but there isn't based on what I've read. Just have to turn the difficulty down if you don't have 6.

Otherwise, I agree. Its ridiculous with anything less than 6. It is most noticeable when fighting a tank. Less than 6 MAYBE 5 and you cannot destroy the tank before it reaches the bomb site.

Maybe because we were getting hammered so hard and it was the first time, but I think PvP is more interesting at the moment. The only reason I want to keep playing is to actually finish a round.

I was upset when the server bugged needing a restart and then lagged for no apparent reason.

I also couldn't figure out why console reported maxplayers 32 when the server started but steam reported 24. After entering rcon maxplayers I got 24 but sending rcon maxplayers 32 would give an error saying "maxplayers cannot be changed when server is started". Then after doing it 10 times it took it and increased it to 32.

Aside from that I think it performed well.

Mine took me over a half hour to finally get lucky enough for an open slot, you got lucky. Other people in this thread also mentioned the same issue I was having.

We were sooooooo close. We could have had a second chance at wave 8 if the map time didn't expire. I just changed it to unlimited minutes from 35 so we shouldn't have that problem again.

I also identified why the server was reporting 24 available slots to steam clients while displaying 32 slots in the console. There is a line in the server.cfg file that specifically controls how many slots are reported to steam.

I have also slightly increased the bandwidth available to clients. Might give a smoother experience. Took it from 20kbps to 100kbps.

I wish there was more info available on this stuff. Thanks for being patient.

I didn't know that every time the map is cleared it loads the next with more / harder waves.

Now I know why I think it's to easy when I keep playing 6/6 then getting bored.

I think there is a higher probability of playing tomorrow night. People normally don't go out late at night because they work the next day.

I think 10 PM EST has been working really well for this group.

And tickets only work on the official Valve servers, Jeff.

After last night I think "official" servers are way harder then setting up a server at home like Sam or I did.

We had no problem on ours server getting though 6+ waves with no fails. We didn't make it to the last wave at all last night with a good team set up and players.

I have a felling that my $1 ticket will never get redeemed for a win.

Looks like mann up mode is significantly harder by design, on a non mann up server you can do 6 waves with 4/5 people. In mann up you need 6 and if you get less them like a B/C on any waves you are very gimped.

To bad you can only play mann up on Valve servers =(
