TF2 Thread

So people stop getting so antsy in their pantsy, we may as well have a dedicated TF2 thread. Didn't find one previously in this forum.

@Joe: Was fun playing with you tonight. Learned a ---- ton, although spies disguise bites me in the ass every time.

Jeff_Ciesielski 01-25-2012 10:11 PM

I'm all about some TF2. Been a while since I played, but I'd love to get some ---- going.

blaen99 01-25-2012 10:54 PM

Hit me up on the mt.net steam group sometime!

It should prove to be entertaining.

Gryff 01-25-2012 10:59 PM

Anyone interested in playing this weekend? I really want to play some, but Ive been crazy hard pressed for time as of lately...

That was you? Sorry I just left you stranded there, but dinnertime was calling. And thanks for the gift- my Heavy is wearing it.

Yeah, the spy thing is a killer when you're playing as engineer and camped out in a dead-end spot like that. You have to just assume that every single player who comes running in is a disguised spy- shoot first and ask questions later. Remember that your sentry won't engage an enemy spy who is cloaked or disguised. You have to make the first move, forcing them to retaliate again you and drop their disguise, at which point your sentry will wipe them out.

So just start shooting immediately whenever you see anyone come into the room. If they're friendly, no harm done. If they were a spy, you will cause damage on them. Fortunately, they're usually focused on sapping the sentries so it's not too hard to get a couple of good shots into them, which is all it takes.

And the teleporter trick I was doing is basically an early-warning system. When an enemy gets into that hallway outside, they can never resist destroying an undefended teleporter entrance. That lets you know that someone is inbound. It also differentiates inbound spies from everyone else- a spy will sap the teleporter, whereas anyone else will just shoot it. In a best-case scenario, an enemy spy will actually use the teleporter to enter the intel room, in which case he'll be killed instantly.

I wish we'd have had more activity tonight. That was the most boring time I've ever spent down in the intel room. Normally there's more action, but I guess our guys up top were doing their job.

shuiend 01-26-2012 12:08 AM

I am reinstalling TF2 now.

Man, those CTF games dragged on and on. In prior FPS's, I would say it is due to the teams sucking, but I don't know enough about it yet in TF2 to call it.

But timing out CTF maps with ~3 hour (I think?) time limits is crazy.

Yeah, that one last night was really strange. I've only played a few rounds on that map, but I have never seen so little activity down in intel.

Which is why I switched to pyro. :D

Actually, I got on a different server later and teamed up with another engineer to have some real fun- we'd build level 3 sentries just outside of spawn and then carry them downstairs to the foot of the bridge. Had to work pretty hard due to the spy problem, but it was a real slaughterhouse otherwise.

I'm all about the flare gun. I love to catch spys on fire.

Most of my in-game time has been spent as Heavy, as I've mostly been doing the payload race maps. I've just started exploring pyro and engineer recently.

Here, have sandvich:

Want one? I have three of them, I could easily trade you for one. I've also got 3 frontier justice's, 2 ali baba's boots, 2 sandvich's, and 2 wingers if anyone wants any of those.

I'm with Brainy on this. The class is mind-numbingly boring.

Braineack 01-26-2012 03:44 PM

you can do that? man i havent played in such a long time.

blaen99 01-26-2012 03:51 PM

Yep.

Oh, if someone wants any of the above, I'm headed to Europe for 2 weeks on the morning of the 28th, so hit me up before I leave yo. Just one warning, you'll have to trade me any class item you want in trade (Any, literally, it doesn't matter so long as it's a class item) - need this stuff for crafting!

Braineack 01-26-2012 03:53 PM

man. i gotta load up the game again and see what im missing, i dont recall knowing those, like i said, i stopped playing just as they started giving all these achievement things.

I actually am starting to warm up to the item system. It's an FPS take on MMO gearing.

Sadly, there's one or two items that are severely overpowered.

Joe Perez 01-26-2012 04:50 PM

I happened to open my bag for the first time when you gave me the glasses the other day, and I didn't realize I had accumulated so much stuff. A lot of it I will probably never use simply because I don't like to play certain classes (Holey Mackerel, 3x Force-a-Nature, etc).

Gryff 01-26-2012 05:51 PM

I can have fun with engi, and other times I find it rediculously boring. it just depends on the day.

Ill have to see what I have and what I need, I dont have a terribly large collection of stuff laying around...

Braineack 01-26-2012 05:56 PM

looks like i gotta reinstall it...

I wouldn't bother until you're home. I tried playing from a hotel connection a few months ago in NYC, and it just didn't work.

FRT_Fun 01-26-2012 08:15 PM

balls I don't get home for 2 more weeks :(

blaen99 01-26-2012 08:40 PM

I'm starting to like King of the Hill maps. As always, my preference is to play with people I know at least though.

You could give it a try, I've seen a decent Hotel or two for gaming surprisingly.

Gryff 01-26-2012 09:06 PM

Same here, but since I dont know many who play, it doesnt really bother me to just join a game

And yes, that was quite a bit of fun! we need to do that more often. ;)

99mx5 01-27-2012 12:58 PM

Yeah good games! BTW, MT hipsters now use Skype.

Braineack 01-27-2012 01:00 PM

OG gansters stick with vent

Joe Perez 01-27-2012 02:16 PM

So, for those of us who have never used either, how does this affect your ability to communicate with the other players in the game- the ones who aren't on your skype/vent chat?

And how do you handle situations where the server has forced you onto opposing teams? Do you just camp until a slot frees up and you can switch back over to the same team? Seems like it'd be a Bad Thing to be broadcasting tactical information to members of the opposing team, even if they are your friends.

You can still use the in-game voice chat fine as well as vent (Just bind them to different keys). Skype doesn't work well with this.

Aim for each other and kill each other repeatedly?

I was doing suicide runs to kill Cave[MT] last night. It was entertaining.

99mx5 01-27-2012 02:25 PM

So far not much tactical info has been said on vent, its used more for taunting and BSing. When auto-switching happens, I pretty much just roll with it. The guy that has been dominating you, eventually ends up giving you health after you or he is switched.

I am about to bust out the ban hammer.

I am trying to convince rick to let me set up a tf2 server on one of his servers. It would be awesome to have our own place where we can make it so we are not auto team switched.

So the mic isn't always hot?

Yeah, in vent (if you set it up right), it's push to talk like TF2. In Skype, the mic is always hot, and as a result sux0rs for this sort of thing.

Joe, I, and one other MT guy ended up in a 2v2. It wasn't much fun.

Engineers ruled all but spy, and spy would have ruled engineer if I hadn't had sucked so hard at it. The idea sounds great, but we need teh players :(.

99mx5 01-27-2012 02:59 PM

I would have played TF2 longer, but Rick twisted my arm and forced me to play BF3. ;) By the time I got out of the game, it was getting late.

Yeah, that 2-on-2 sucked balls. Once I figured out what was going on, me and the other guy on my team (non-MT) both engied up and built a nice little sentry farm which we kept moving forwards a little bit at a time. Probably the only time I have ever captured a control point as an engineer.

But then you guys figured out the spy trick, and we started having to spend all our time on sapper patrol. That game would have stalemated if we'd stayed in it.

How the hell did we wind up on that server, anyway?

Gryff 01-27-2012 03:57 PM

Joe, it was one of those gay servers that broadcasts that it has 20/24 slots filled... even though in reality it was empty. and once you joined, I figured we would roll with it for a moment. To give you an idea, when I talk on vent I hold shift, and I hold Q to talk in game. it works flawlessly for me. and obviously you can use any combination of keys that fits yourself best. Also, you can set the mic as always hot if you want to.

99mx5 your lemmiwinks, right? I always get confused between steam names and profiles here.

Oh man, you don't ever want to be running the same guild/clan tags as me and be in the opposing team.

For me, that's a big giant target that I need to get while ignoring all else. Even if I do nothing but die in trying to get that target. Killing me isn't really an effective way to dissuade me from doing that, as dying horribly just makes me laugh as you heard last night.

Yeah... I noticed...

Tw34k 01-27-2012 05:31 PM

I haven't really played much since steam got achievements and they added all of the pickup items/hats to TF2, so now that the game has changed so much I decided to reset my stats last night since I'm getting back into it. Plus no one took stats seriously back then.

Does anyone else remember the game from it's original form before all the extra stuff or did most of you come along after the F2P deal?
