Let's come up with a new hood design.
I have a fiberglass shop and have been messing around with various miata hoods over the last month to get a better feel for what it takes. We do not have the ability to do a vacuum press, so they all came out about 5lbs more than OEM. As of now we are not doing it with the OEM hood catch and only through hood pins, so I would concier it a track hood for now.
What I need are some rough designs as to what you guys want. I will do all the work on it and only charge you guys what it costs for me in parts plus their labor. My guys are just sitting around and need stuff to do. I know most agree that the front vent behind the radiator would be beneficial, but what about more than that? Would the FM extractor hood plus that front extractor be the perfect hood? Let me know guys. Eventually I will work in the hood catches, but it is not my number one priority. |
you dont have the ability to do a vacuum bag? you should. it's cheap and easy and shocking that you dont do it.
the materials aren't terribly expensive and the vacuum is easy to draw. you dont even need a vacuum pump. just get a large pressure (vacuum) vessel and a venturi vacuum connector for your air compressor. I've seen people use an old hot water heater as a vacuum chamber. plus you guarantee a stronger part and eliminate unsaturated air pockets. DO IT DO IT DO IT |

OK then, I will start looking at doing a vacuum setup. While I am figuring that out, we can come up with the design. Everything that we do is done with hand laid fiberglass, so there hasn't been a need to even look into vacuum systems until now.

there's no reason you can't vac bag a hand laid setup.
I did it in college on a 15 foot boat hull. it's really very simple. you lay all our materials and resin into the mold, lay the vacuum bagging layers on, and seal it all with pucky tape (basically rope caulk). course I worked with a guy who worked a lot with burt rutan so that helped :) |

GV lid. Extractor behind the radiator, inlet for the turbo. Personally just the extractor looks good to me. In any northern state it'd be important to have the extractor far enough forward that rain won't dump in on the engine and belts. |

Honestly one large vent behind the radiator and louvers down the sides is probably the best for track use. Something like the autokonexion hood.

From what I understand, the Subie has the hood scoop for an intercooler underneath. Having one on a miata would be pointless, unless you want to aircool the engine (you don't want to aircool the engine). Also, you are going to need a way to vent the air that goes into the scoop, otherwise the scoop is just going to act as a barrier to the oncoming air, like pop-up headlights. I don't think making the air travel a 90* bend through the engine bay and out the bottom is very effective.
...Unless you're talking about the vent in front of the scoop, in which case it would look badass. |

If I could get a hold of the GV hood I could make it really fast. I have a couple straght hoods that I could start cutting and looking at.
