That has to be a nightmare to package.
There seem to have been several different designs used in various prototype cars over the past two years. The one I posted with the two A/A intercoolers was from a 2014 article which also noted the use of two-piece steel (!) pistons:

Mazda's SkyActiv-D Engine Performing Well Despite On-track Woes - Diesel Army

I've seen pictures of the W/A intercooler in various articles ranging from 2012-2015, so I really have no idea what the final story is. It's possible that different cars in different races use different intercooling solutions.

Honestly, I don't see the packaging being any more complex than what's going on under the hood of any showroom-stock transverse-engine turbo car with aircon, hydraulic power steering, ABS, loads of plastic intake piping, cooling lines for the automatic transmission, etc.

FWIW, the stock turbo setup is pretty compact:

The two turbos are bolted directly together on both the hot and cold sides, with no intermediate intercooling. I've no details on how the wastegates are controlled, or why we're seeing three vacuum actuators instead of two; that seems to conflict with what I've read about constant-compound charging, though perhaps that was specific only to the race engines.

Mazda's official video is not especially forthcoming with details:

EDIT:

I did find this slightly cryptic diagram:

And some tech info on the Audi setup: http://articles.sae.org/10308/

I'm going to stop hijacking the thread now.

They've landed, and are coming ashore:

I only have one shot of the 2.2. They had way more exploded dioramas of their rotaries and the Renesis RE system.

Read somewhere (Mulsanne's Corner?) that the Skyactiv-D race engine in the LMP car has a higher specific hp/liter than the R18.

Personally, I'd drive a 5000rpm 1.4L Skyactiv-D Miata with say, 125whp and oh, 200WTQ. I would just want an 8spd paddle shift auto to go along with it.

why not just a nice smooth CVT so you're always at the peak torque.

Calerpitter makes a 13 liter diesel using the same twin turbo layout:

especially since turbos are completely irrelevant to the production ND.

I don't see any problem.

1. They wouldn't sell any more if they added say 30hp. They'd have to add a bunch, say 70hp which would require re-engineering most of the drivetrain. Even then, they wouldn't sell a ton.

2. The NA was massively popular and an unqualified success, with 116bhp. Despite what internet trolls rant about, there is a long line of people that will find the car rewarding just as it is.

3. More room for us tuners to play with it

I heard somewhere that Mazda USA has already sold over 5k units. This surpasses the launch of the NC and no one has even taken delivery yet. One has to think they'll be in the low teens by the time the model year is over. Not sure what Mazdas sales targets are for US. Hope they exceed them.

I think the success so far of the ND is awesome because if it continues it will show mazda that people actually want a light small car, not the NC. So maybe they will keep advancing and shrinking the ND instead of bloating it like they did with the NA->NB->NC

Yeap.

I'm not in a situation to buy buying new cars right now, but unless mazda releases a new RX7 that looks as good as the old FD, I'll buy a new ND miata in a few years. I best not test drive one before then....

Yeah don't. The ND does the same thing to you even a $1800 Craigslist NA beater does. You flog it for a few blocks and get a big stupid grin on your face.

because people love fat bloated high hp cars?

mustang/camaro/charger/challenger are perfect examples of 'muricuhh

even the sti/evo are porkers.

I hate the 350/70Z. They are okay at everything, good at nothing, and surprisingly unrewarding to drive (IMO)
