Shame this guy is gone, I was going to offer an even-steven swap with a well running 96 (but I'd insist we swapped my top and wheels and tires and hood and tail lights and steering wheel (wheelskin ftw), oh and remove the style bar/tanno if he wanted it, I'd just shitcan it possibly the body kit, eyeball vent thingys). Non turbo, non problem. Good for a college kid. Of course he'd have to drive his to MD and mine back again so we could do the swappage. I've got a spare motor with a perfectly good crank from my wreck.
Since I'm an honest seller, I'd also let him know that there is a leak from the rear-engine seal (been that way for over a year, I just add oil)
If he decided he didn't like the well-running 96, he could sell it for probably what he'd get if he priced his car like a nice guy not trying to rip people off.
Of course, I'd need him to scan a copy of a clear title which would never happen based on his failure to deliver in this thread.
Would have been a fun project turning a hooptie into a stock looking respectable miata and a stock looking miata into a hooptie.
All in all, the kid took a pretty good beating mostly in stride, so I'd take my chances.
