So has anyone here driven a 350 whp turbo Miata and an LS1 Miata? Which did you like? Which was easier to drive? Which is the better street car?

What kind of numbers are you running? I have a coworker with a new C6 vette I would like to victimize if possible.

TK600 is a good tranny. It will bolt up just like the T5 but you need a different bellhousing. It uses the same driveshaft. Since monster miata has a setup for the T5, id just get the driveshaft and other parts from them. Their kit I believe is for a T% tranny. All you would need to do is get the different bellhousing and it should all bolt up and be in the same place as with a T5.

So an LS1 with 80k miles just came up on my local craigslist for $800.....and I'm second guessing my whole turbo build. I'm thinking I could resell the S3 kit for what I paid ($1300) and have $500 to put toward the rest of the build. Would take longer than the turbo build (and cost more), but I'd have a bulletproof 300+ WHP and never have to worry about .msq's and pinging and so on.

Great price for the engine.

Discovery of an $800 LSx engine is exactly why I decided it made more sense to do a V8 swap instead of a turbo.

It will still cost more, but at the end of the day you've got more power, more torque, more upgrade potential, and (imo) better reliability.

No worries about the strength of your transmission and differential. No hot-side fasteners working themselves loose.

Good price on motor, but beware that the T56 will be double that amount. Generally $1200-$1500. That said, DO IT!

Any reason why 80k miles should bother me? Fewer miles than my 1.6 now, for what it's worth, but I see guys looking for lower mileage on their LSx swaps, so I'm curious if there's any particular high-mileage issue with those motors.

It depends on the motor. If they ran nitrous or abused it yes it could be a problem. But if it's just normal use, it's not an issue.

Bah, finally got a reply. No oil pan, no balancer, no flywheel, no harness, and no accessories. $800 seems pretty high now.

Definitely has me thinking about watching for a shell and a cheap 302 or L33, though. For now, the turbo build (err, parts acquisition) resumes.

One thing to bear in mind, believe it or not, the engine/trans are one of the cheapest parts of a build. All said and done, from those that have done it, is that you should plan on $10K all in, plus whatever you have for a car. That is, unless you plan on fabbing everything yourself. It adds up in a hurry.
