On 05/08/15 at approximately 1511 hours a black Dodge Challenger was observed on east bound I-94 near Outer Drive driving in a reckless manner. This observation was made by an Allen Park police officer conducting traffic enforcement in the area. The Challenger was traveling in excess of 90 mph. When the officer entered the roadway to initiate a traffic stop, the Challenger increased his speed and maneuvered through existing traffic. He was observed utilizing the shoulder of the freeway when traffic was prohibiting his progress.
The officer believed he had caught up to the vehicle near Michigan Ave where traffic congestion had forced him to slow down. Believing that this was the same vehicle he had originally seen driving recklessly, the officer initiated a traffic stop on east bound I-94 near Addison.
The officer arrested the operator for reckless driving. His vehicle was impounded and he was transported to the Allen Park Police department. The defendant then posted bond and was released.
On 05/11/2015 the Allen Park Police Department became aware of internet posted video from a dashboard mounted camera that showed this reckless driving incident and the subsequent traffic stop. They were both black Dodge Challengers but there were small aftermarket modifications that distinguished the two vehicles. On 05/12/2015, the owner of the video footage presented a full copy of his recordings to the Allen Park Police Department. Upon review of the full recording and discussion with the officer involved it was determined that the individual that was arrested was not operating the vehicle that had been originally seen driving in a reckless manner.
The arrested subject was notified and advised that a mistake was made and that the charge for reckless driving would be dismissed and he would be reimbursed for the bond and tow fees that he incurred.
Both the person who provided the video and the driver who was mistakenly arrested have requested that their privacy be maintained. The Allen Park Police are currently attempting to locate the original driver with the help of the video footage that was provided.

I tested the theory of letting impatient drivers pass this morning. A guy in a minivan tried to frog-hop me at the highway entrance ramp; while I was letting the traffic that was getting off the highway merge in front of me so that I could get on the ramp, he crossed the white lines before the ramp started and accelerated forward. I accelerated my lane change to stay in front of him, and of course he waves his hands and gets on my bumper. Halfway down the ramp, I waved him by, laughing and smiling at him. As karma would have it, I saw him about 5 miles down the road as he was sitting in a dead stop with a long line of cars at his exit.
