Weird light up mirror in my bathroom.




Found a big spider at the top of Willis Tower.

 

I detest that name. It has been long since deprecated, and must be stricken from the collective consciousness.

That shot was from the 102nd fl of 1 WTC. The observation deck grand opening is this Friday, we're doing a live shot on WPIX tomorrow morning during the news, and we went out to set up and test the gear and make sure we had a good signal.

For some reason, my brain wasn't fully engaged, as I could have saved some time by leaving the fancy video-over-IP codec at the shop and just bringing out one of the old portable microwave transmitters. From where we were at, you could just sit it on the floor and point it directly at our primary MW receive antenna at Empire.



I only got to visit the old 1 WTC once- a trip to deliver some equipment up to the WKCR transmitter room on the 110th floor, on 10 Sep 2001. (5.8 Ghz spread-spectrum T1 radio transceiver and antenna.)

I never had a chance to go out to the perimeter and look out a window at the time, as I was in a hurry and I expected to be back a few days later to configure the gear I'd just dropped off.

So for me, this was a highly cathartic moment. Took 14 years, but I finally got to see that view. Pretty moving.

Worked out pretty good for my crew, as well.

I left that night, but they were still in town, and were supposed to be up there the next morning hanging the antenna. The chief's daughter, however, came down with a cold that night, so he phoned in early the next morning and told everyone to just go to the studio (uptown at Bway & 114) instead.

The days which ensued were... interesting. Given the loss of all but one TV transmitter and about half the FM transmitters in town, those of us in the business of supplying and installing such things were kept properly busy for a while. It was a time of great cooperation and teamwork, when competing companies and stations were practically falling over themselves to help one another out.

My office was on 82North in 2WTC, looking straight uptown. It was really cool during winter watching all the city lights turning on, especially the East River bridges. Got to see some really interesting stuff.

I lost my job in 1983, so I was pretty removed by 2001.
An acquaintance is a NYC fireman who was playing golf on 9/11. He's the only member of his squad that survived the day, and still has trouble with it.
