I drove a 71 VW bus for four years and a 69 Jeep for six- I doubt they'd fair too well in these crash tests.

^Rookies.

It is typically much more trouble to explosively demo a building than to break it down piece by piece in sections. It is usually some hotshot who just likes to say he blows **** up for a living. Good demo guys will tell you it is much easier and safer to disassemble a building. The aftermath of an implosion that goes well is typically significantly more dangerous to handle because there air voids and unstable pieces. How much worse if the demo goes poorly?

OK, now that they've screwed up and damaged the structure you have to send people and machines in there to finish taking it down. How good is that? How safe is that structure now?

And every different type of material is mixed together, which is counterproductive because they all get sorted and go to different locations. Metal beams go here, concrete goes there, rebar goes someplace else, plastics, wood, roofing materials another place. Implosions just mix everything together and require more machine and labor time to sort.

It was because some of the charges did not go off. Wires got severed or something. They did it again today.

But i would argue that this wasn't much more successful. Seems to be standing pretty well still.

To my untrained eye, that seems like a highly incomplete implosion. It seems that significant amounts of structural material are still standing (eg: pretty much the whole structure below the seating), and it makes me wonder about the stability of this material as workers with conventional demolition equipment move in to finish the job.

Concrete and steel building: Start at 2:00. Watch the sorting going on while it's being processed.

If you don't tilt, you can't see on most of the really big ones.

Default Canberra hospital implosion - child killed

I was standing with my two children not far from where this vid was shot. The shrapnel was cutting into the trees above us, bringing down leaves and small branches, and you can see the size of the flying debris by the splashes. It is a minor miracle that only one person was killed, a 12 year old girl - same age as my daughter and her school friend who was with us. We walked past her on the way out, the paramedics working on her to no avail, but at that stage we didn't know it was someone hit by the debris. When I heard what had happened on the car radio on the way home I went into shock, knowing just how close we had come to the same fate.

Wrong explosive used, instead of cutting through the steel beams encased in concrete, it shattered them and blasted them out towards the spectators.
