Stone Town, Zanzibar

A densely populated, pretty "aromatic" little town on the west side of the island.
Incredibly narrow streets, countless souvenir shops, tourist traps, a few decent restaurants here and there...

 

They don't bother with underground cables in Stone Town..
Hell, even water mains run overhead.

Freddie Mercury was born in this house.
It's a B&B now.
(Apparently, Freddie Mercury never spoke of Zanzibar, ever)

 

These newspapers are not for sale. It's a communal reading spot..



Also, the fish market.
A distinct lack of refrigeration adds to the aroma in the air.

 

Our hotel was probably the coolest place in town...



And, this is how I spent my evenings there - tea and camels by the pool.
Yes I brewed my own, and yes, I know all about glasses and poolside etiquette, and yes, I said **** it.

 

The water and power utilities shown in those photos remind me of my childhood in Puerto Rico. The infrastructure there is equally abstract.

 

Must have just watched the South Park episode about HumancentiPad.

That's one way to put it. Unfortunately it was still like that when the hurricane hit last year. Hopefully it will be upgraded during the restoration (last I heard something like 35,000 poles were being imported).

Here's a fuel filter from a diesel. If you look closely you can see the folded paper elements down in the dirt and algae.

It was running still.

I like the color. I can do without the silly flowers, though.
