They're not models. I personally oversaw the de-commissioning of both of those trucks. We stripped most of the expensive stuff out of them, but left the antenna masts in place when sending them to the wrecker, since they were pretty old and worn out. When I heard that news was planning this stunt, I had to remind them "You might want to torch those out of the chassis prior to running over them with a tank. I realize that tanks are heavy, but extruded aluminum cylinders, stacked coaxially six-deep, are also pretty strong. It would be embarrassing if the tank high-sided midway through the crush."

I also had to remind them, after I heard that they were planning to light off fireworks at the moment of demolition: "You do realize that our helicopter is going to be covering this, and that, all else being equal, firing explosive shells out of a canon at a helicopter is generally understood to be a bad idea, unless your intention is to bring down the helicopter, right?"

I assume that most managers don't have to counsel their counterparts in other departments about the dangers of firing anti-aircraft weapons in the vicinity of an aircraft which we own. This is the kind of **** I have to deal with on a daily basis.

How long until the "What is wrong with your news station? You could have donated those vans to local charities/churches/homeless shelters/etc" hate mail starts coming in?

It already started:

The reality is that if there is one thing that a charity (or anyone else) does not want, it's an old news van.

Beyond the fact that we flog these things mercilessly and drive them into oblivion, we also strip out the whole interior, cut large holes in the roof and sides, make extensive modifications to the fuel and electrical systems, cut and weld the frame for the generator and mast supports, and basically just render them totally unsuitable for any normal use. De-modifying a free ENG truck for church use would cost a heck of a lot more than just buying a used E350 from a dealer.

^Not surprised, I'm sure it started before the actual destruction actually started. And I completely believe that re: all the modifications done to the truck.

That's like now I'm watching all the people bitching about the Kaiser Foundation offering $10k to remote Tech Workers to relocate to Tulsa for a year in the hopes they will want to stay, and help boost the educated, tech savvy job pool.

It's amazing to see how many people work at Best Buy/Chili's/etc commenting stuff like "They should give that money to people who already live here." whining because they offer no unique skills, hence their current positions.

I was intrigued enough to Google this. I'm pretty sure it's a troll account. Here's another sample tweet:

Sadly, it's harder and harder to separate the wheat (The Onion-style parody) from the chaff (actual lunatics) nowadays. It's kind of like Justice Potter Stewart's "I know it when I see it". Titania McGrath, it seems, is truly an expert in her field - able to troll people who engage her like a world-class musician fingers a cello.
