Good time of the year to ask these questions. Another question to ask--after Jesus died, a lot of the apostles were tortured and/or killed because they wouldn't denounce him (Him?). If it was all an elaborate prank you'd think that those fishermen would just go back to fishing, or at least say "Nah, didn't happen."

If I'm interpreting you correctly, you're questioning whether people could be sufficiently charmed / brainwashed by a charismatic person, who is not in fact god, to follow them into the grave.
