The first one I owned had a motor that was very sloppily assembled. When I tore it down after years of operation, I found that the rods didn't even match (one of them was clearly a different casting from the rest.) That engine leaked a lot, but ran fine.
The other spun a #3 rod bearing while I was driving it home from having purchased it. Bought a new 1776cc engine from Fisher Buggies and it was golden.
CB Performance does a lot of interesting things with these engines, including turn-key EFI turbo systems. Their old engine management system was horribly primitive, but the new one looks pretty decent- wideband and all.

That system is designed to fit into a stock Beetle, so the charge pipe has to clear the hood while also clearing the crossbar linkage to the throttle bodies.
The pressure ducts in their mid-engine / dune buggy kits are much smoother:

do you guys remember a blue miata with weird as read fenders that pretty much covered half the wheels? I think it was posted for sale, along with some stupid youtube video to show a walk around of the car????

Yep, pretty fail design.
Although that is a much more recent Beetle motor, the early ones had similar (crappy) heads.
You should feel sorry for me. I used to have to try to improve those heads in order to make my pile of a race car faster
Later when I got out of it, I found out that everybody was cheating by opening up the intake manifold tube. They did so by forcing a series of ball bearings through them with hydraulic pressure.
So all my head work was in vain because I was using the stock manifold like a good little racer.
