Default Refridgerator suggestions?

After being serviced for about the 18th time in 2 years, We have been told that our GE side by side has developed a Freon leak and will need to be replaced. Our home warranty offered us another GE, but I don't want to go through that again.

Does anyone know who makes a decent side by side?

Do you just have to cover the difference in cost or are you paying completely out of pocket to get something other than a GE?

Not a fan of the bottom freezer drawer. My parents have that and I always found it to be a pain.

We would just have to cover the difference in cost. They valued the one we have at around $1100. I am not afraid to spend a little money to get something that is a little more reliable.

I bought three at the Sears Outlet scratch and dent store for a couple or three hundred dollars or more off retail each time. They all still work. Brand hasn't mattered, although none are fancy electronic ones, which probably helps longevity. All refrigerators are Chinese or Korean as far as I can tell. The last one was 22 cu.ft. for $350 iirc. The managers will haggle, especially before the end of the month.

I have all Kenmore appliances in my house. I thought the quality of them were very good, but times must have changed. I am nothing but dissatisfied with them. When the time comes, I am moving on to a different brand.

Because any refrigerator without an integrate TV is useless.

I got my oversize Whirlpool at Sears. Old one was dying, and I needed to buy fast. When I asked about a particular model, it wasn't in stock. So, they went to the next one up (including ice maker), for the same price. Delivered it the next day, and hauled away the old one.

That was 14 years ago, and it's still going strong.

dont ever buy a GE appliance if you want a reliable and/or long lasting and/or american, appliance.

We have a Frigidaire; it's okay gets the job done. I've seen LGs--really like them.

I'm a big fan of Bosch appliances too.

I think bosch might be a little too rich for my blood. I will take a look at LG and fridgidaire.

I am unaware of anything that GE makes that I would consider "good." The meters they make are some what robust, but the software for them sucks, and the peripherals they put on them are very poorly thought out. We used to buy their RTUs, and we had to optically isolate every wire that was connected to them to keep them from buring out.

Thanks, This is exactly the kind of information I was after.

We will take a look at samsung, LG whirlpool and frigidaire then.

My GE dishwasher was in the house for 10-12 years before I bought it. I have been in the house for almost 29 years. Except for the **** breaking off, it still works and looks fine. It gets used weekly, at least.

I'll be in the market for a refrigerator in the next year.

I recently bought a simple GE chest freezer, and the thermostat went within 30 days of purchase. It was repaired free under warranty via GE service tech, but that still doesn't leave me feeling very excited about my venison. I had to purchase an external temp sensor with an audible alarm in order to regain peace of mind.

On the flipside, I recently purchased a Maytag dishwasher (6 months) and I have been nothing short of thrilled with it. It has a bazillion features, and they are all implemented flawlessly. I occasionally open the dishwasher to find that it was already running, it's that quiet. (Model is designed without a locking mechanism, and shuts off completely in the few milliseconds between the time you give the door a tug and the time the door seal is broken.) Sometimes, we'll sit in the living room watching a movie, and during a quiet scene, the wifey will lean over and ask me very seriously, "did you just hear something moving in the kitchen?" to which I'll reply, "It's the dishwasher". The total distance between dishwasher and living room couch is 8-10 feet, and it's an open kitchen/living room design, so there is no full wall to muffle the sound.

The previous dishwasher required us to turn up the TV so that we could hear.

That is all.

Same can be said for almost any american brand back in the day. Their new stuff, even the highest model lines are cheap chinese products that don't last.

The icemaker in my GE Profile refrigerator, bought new at Best Buy 4/08, broke within 3 months. They couldn't replace the broken part because the tray had 7 slots for ice, and that fridge was only supposed to have a 6-slot ice maker, something to that matter according to GE and any parts place and BB. I never got it resolved as they refused to replace the entire unit, and had to DIY a solution.

My parents redid their kitchen in 2000, they've already had to service/replace every one of their GE appliance (fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher).

While my current lineup of Frigidaire is nothign special, at least it works.

The previous dishwasher required us to turn up the TV so that we could hear.
My GE Profile dishwasher was SOOOOO loud. we couldn't watch TV while it ran. We replaced it with a Bosch and you couldn't hear it standing right next to it; it just sounded like light rain hitting your roof. The difference in build quality/tech/logic was insane.

This is very true... lmao

My LG has the TV in the door, its pretty cool, but i only turn it on like once every other month or so.

ALSO... Not to sway any opinions on LG, because i personally love it... but my fridge had a Manufacturers Defect... one of the Water lines that is permanently installed in the foam of the case, was bad... so my water dispenser doesnt work. LG offered to replace it, or reimburse some of the cost (that specific problem is un-repairable)... Seeing as how i Drink bottled water only, i didnt see it as that big of a deal. So i opted to get a reimbursement... about 3 weeks later, i received a check for $800. Over HALF of what the fridge cost. I was very very satisfied... haha
And the fridge still kicks *** 6 years later. haha

same problem here, lol

We looked at the bosch refrigerators, they got pretty poor reviews and were very expensive.

My advice:

Don't buy a refridgerator with a 'd' in it.
