I had a 1981 Toyota Celica. 4 banger, 5 speed. Nothing special, but it had loads of torque down low (2.4liter 22R engine). That car was so much fun, I often said that if they ever made something like it again, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Then comes the BRZ, and I'm in love. Next comes a test drive, and I am so very disappointed. I mean, it's a nice car, and I'd still like to have one. But why, oh, why couldn't they give it some balls? |
The weird thing (at least IMO) is that down low, it's actually relatively peppy for a small high revving engine. The "dip" is what really kills it for me, as it does for just about everyone under the sun, and personally I don't think simply leveling it out is enough (though definitely a big improvement).
I'd love to drive one with a small turbo on it. This Saturday I drove a 14 GTi and 14 BRZ back to back, and remember thinking: the formers powerband into the latter would be AMAZING. |
That's one of the things I love about the 135i. 300lb/ft from 1400 to 5300 RPMs. Need to do an oil cooler and intercooler, DINAN stage 3 tune takes the car from 300/300 to around 375/400.

Yeah that's really neat. There's a M235i at work that I constantly stare at in the parking lot, such a pretty car. I'll see how your experience with "ze jermanz" goes and maybe consider one in a couple years

But that's also why I bought a 1 owner, dealer maintained, 2013 (last model year) with only 26k miles on it. And DINAN doesn't do "all of it" tunes, so that makes me feel good about using their stuff even though it's a bit pricier than other options. |
And I'm getting a smoking deal on getting the car paint correction/ceramic coating this weekend. A buddy of mind has a detailing side business, he's trying to get his foot in the door in the ceramic coating side of things with some of his higher end customers.
Since I'll be his first, the car (and the new wheels) are getting Ceramic Coated for $500. Pro-detail shops charge more like $1500-2000 for it. |
Pulled the engine out of the STi yesterday. Did a routine compression test last week, and compression in cyl4 is starting to drop, and car has more and more blow-by. That usually means 1 thing. Time for build
Looks like the clutch was on it's last legs too, so that's getting replaced as well. |
I'm putting my '07 up for sale if anyone is looking for some hot Subaru action:

What exactly am I seeing here, a ring land burned at the gap of the 2nd ring?
Yes I watch this. |
Regardless, this is what happens preparing to stomp me :D

You're seeing a piston that was beat on with junk stock tune for 75k miles by a clueless non-car guy, then sold to me and the power effectively doubled, effectively ending it's lifespan.
I am pretty happy that it went out in the easiest/softest way possible. Just started losing compression. No smoke, no damage to anything, just two tiny cracks in cyl4. I could technically just do a light hone (no scratches) and replace the 1 piston and be done. But that's not the proper way to do it.
