I'm sure something can be arranged...
Blaen: I lost the place I was living in and everything in it back in 2008 during the big *** fires here in California. I'm not sure what the status is with your particular fire, but watch your ***. I watched the fire jump the ridge and informed CDF/CalFire immediately by phone and then 4 hours later at a Public Information meeting. The denied my eyewitness account and claimed their satellites (12hr delay, wtf?) had seen no evidence of what I was talking about, so it must not be true. I was 4 miles closer to the fire than my next closest neighbor and they dropped a line 3-4 miles behind me and left my **** to burn.
Remember its the Public Information Officers job to hand out doublespeak or even straight lies to keep people calm and complacent right until the end. They have no desire to keep you informed, their job is to keep you out of their way.
Pack your important **** and get it the hell out of there. Stuff is just stuff, it can be replaced. Important **** like your grandfathers war medals and your ID, passport, birth certificate, pink slips, and etc should already be out.
Good luck and god speed.

Wow, I had a really long day of volunteer work, and logged into a "Holy **** what just happened what the **** is going on?" barrage of stuff here.
Thank you very much for the advice, EO2k. It is sincerely appreciated. Due to recent events today, I'm actually taking it to heart - I've already got most of my important valuables moved to my apartment across the state, I just have one last load plus the Miata to take (Since the last load is going in the Miata, it's pretty small), and I'll be heading there in the next day or two. There are a few things volunteer-wise that I absolutely want to finish up before I leave.
Today, a firefighter died that was working close to my home. I'm not quite certain as to the details, as they were garbled and changed depending on who told it, but I am certain it is in the newspaper. I'll be picking one up tomorrow to try to find out more. The sun was actually blacked out by the smoke today as well. I have never in the 20 or so years I've been around this area seen this happen. The brightest time of day was looking like it was evening.
The last number I heard was over 60 homes burned down before I got pulled out of my la la land a few days ago (See this thread as reference), and people are talking like it's going to end up a whole lot more.
Frankly, I'm stunned that I missed what the **** was going on around me. I was way, way too wrapped up into what I was doing I guess, and just wasn't paying attention to what was going on around me. I'm just glad I have a week before my master's program starts - it gives me the opportunity to help out while I can, even if the program starts abnormally late for a university.
(Edit) Anyways, night folks. Have a good day tomorrow!
