Getting back on track...
This interests me.
If we assume from the available dynos that a Subaru transmission can survive 450 ft/lbs (and that's a big assumption, given that we're going to be locking it into 2WD mode and putting all that torque through the front diff), and that we can get an SBC to produce that torque at 8,500 RPM, we can make ~730bhp, which is nothing to scoff at.
I may have to sign up on the Scooby forums.

PPG from the UK and some other Australian company make a gearset for the STI box which converts it to dog engagement and can survive in the neighborhood of 700 ft/lbs.
Saker uses the Subaru powertrain in a supercar-type thing of their own.
I think they also sell an inexpensive kit which is simply a blank-off plate and a spline lockout which converts the subaru box from twin output shaft to a single output shaft. With this kit you can do a longitudinal mid rear engine layout.
