I found out today that my son has a cat allergy. So when I get home I get to have a conversation about getting rid of the kitties.

Crystal was tested to be somewhat allergic to cats... don't know if i'd be able to get rid of Peaches if it came down to it.

Nimbus can go, though. That cat is a pain in the ******* ***.

We've had no luck getting the two cats to peacefully coexist. Still.

Last year my wife and I both forgot our wedding anniversary. And when I say "forget", I mean we didn't realize until it was two days later and someone in my family asked us if we had done anything special.

 

Don't stress. I'm allergic to them now (adult onset of certain allergies). I am taking sub-lingual drops prepared by an allergist to desensitize me to the allergens, including cats. It is not expensive and it is working.

 

Not really a huge deal, as I don't really celebrate anymore anyway. At least I got a good meal out of it. Past 50 you start to want B-days to stop, or at least slow down a little.


We did that our 8th or 9th year. We only realized when a card from her grandparents showed up a few days later. We're still going, 9 years later.



I want to buy a Porsche. So, at what point is it well past "mid-life crisis" and into "old age desperation"?

I've often wondered this as well. Personally, I figure that since I've owned Miatas, motorcycles, etc since my mid 20s, nobody is going to be able to tell if I ever experience a mid life crisis.

That said, you've crossed over into "old age desperation" when you decide that said Porsche (or Corvette, or whatever) should have an automatic transmission.

 

At my previous job I had a coworker who jokingly (since I was in my late 20's) referred to my Miata as my "mid-life crisis". I let it go, since the other possibilities for Miata-related jokes were much worse.

 

I've wanted to buy a 911 since the first time I drove one over 30 years ago. Still do. Waiting for the mid-life "I can finally afford it easily" un-crisis.

 

I think there is a difference between the emotional crisis/desperation sportscar purchase and the one where you've worked hard and the kids' education/your house/your retirement are reasonably covered and you are finally able to make the jump. One is about compensating emotionally for the loss of virility and youth in a financially irrational manner and the other is a calculated achievement attained through diligent work and sacrifice.

 

^this. A guy rides bikes, drives sports cars, etc. Then he gets married and has kids. He gives up the sports cars and bikes because there's no room for those and the kids, but he's ok with it because he loves being a father and husband.

Finally, the last of the kids goes off to college and he's able to get a fun car. Everyone laughs at the midlife crisis.

 

The problem is, if I wait until the kid has graduated college, I'll be in my mid to late 60's. Way too old to be enjoying a fast car; I'll be an old fart worried about mileage.
