My ISP doubled my advertised upload speed so I now have the same up and down. They did this without requiring anything of me. And it tests 15% faster in download and 23% faster in upload than what they promise.

Perhaps you just need a new ISP.

 

Well, that's the problem right there. I live in a remote area and there's no DSL coverage here, so I'm on the only solution left, and it has a data cap.

 

Move to a better location?

Sidebar: ever do any research into how FiOS works at the physical layer? It's pretty cool how they passively split and mux all of the consumer strands together.

No you're not, but there has to be a provider that offers it, regardless.

 

Satellite interwebz has data caps.

 

They can in most places, but you will not have the greatest speeds, horrible latencies, and most likely a data cap.

I officially join early retirement tomorrow. The project I am on funding ends and I the company I work for has failed to secure any additional work. Currently I am working on a few leads for future work. I have one 1099 contract job lined up that is almost for certain just have to negotiate on pay. I also have another interview next week at another local tech company. Same recruiter who got me my currently job changed companies and is trying to get me to come over to his new place. That work would be W2 and might be more of what I am interested in.

I also am working on a miata based business. I have mentioned a few clues about it on here, but it will be something I think most of the cheap asses on this site will like.

Having lived with satellite internet (Hughes) for 4 years, I can tell you that anything is better than satellite. DO.NOT.WANT.

Of course living in the woods off the grid was kinda glorious.

The available satellite connection is 20Mbps/6Mbps "almost guaranteed" down/up, is fine by me. I can also live with the 800ms lag but not with the 10GB data cap. DSL is more like 10/1 down/up in most areas but lag is usually less than 30ms. There's no fiber yet, and VDSL (50/50) is only available in a few select blocks.

Anecdote:

Around 2000 or so, I worked at a small radio station in a hick town in Floriduh. No way we could get a T1 that far out in the sticks, even POTS was sketchy sometimes.

Since we needed an "always-on" connection to receive small amounts of data in the background for several systems (weather forecasts, news feeds, etc) we installed a Hughes (later DirecPC) satellite connection. This was great for what we needed it for, but so awful for general web-type activity that it was preferable to use a dial-up modem at ~14.4 or 28.8k and deal with the occasional disconnects.
