SO I am ripping the carpet out of my basement and replacing it with a combination of paint (on the stairs) and laminate (on the floor).

My stairs were built in 1940 and the drywall was put up sometime after 1940, meaning that the drywall hangs over the stairs and there is a visible gap that was formerly covered by the carpet. It looks something like this:



Should I:

a) not give a **** and just pack it full of whatever wall repair material I choose (e.g. plaster) and just cut the line when the wall is painted.

b) do it wrong with zigzag trim like this guy:

c) spend a lot of effort with some 1x12 and do it right like the geniuses here do

Easiest, tear out existing molding, install 1/4 round at the floor, patch wallboard, paint.

The good news is that C is intended to be a "well everything else is already done anyway" type of job so I can choose later.

 

If you're going to actually use the basement (and own the house),put a skirt board down. It's actually not a big deal if you pop the treads + apply the skirt board + put them back down and butt up against the skirt board. Paint the skirt board and sand + stain + refinish the treads looks "real nice Clark".

The skirt board then covers up the drywall/plaster edge.

 

Remodeling is like building a car in that you need to decide ahead of time what your goals are and then handle all the details in ways that are compatible with each other.

One legitimate goal is to do it as cheaply and easily as possible, then just use whatever you find at Mr Seconds and slap it in then cover in off-white paint.

 

First off, I do own the house.
Second, the basement is primarily a storage room with occasional workouts and laundry.
Thirdly, I'm not popping up 75 year old stair treads. I would sooner saw the nose off and install a second tread on top. The treads aren't in good enough condition to return to wood with finish. And since there is a false floor built up, adding an extra 3/4" to each step would actually help make the bottom step taller and the top step shorter (it already has extra height to match the kitchen floor up top).

Previous owners have applied various evil things to them over the decades and while they will make a good "true distressed" look, it wouldn't accomplish my personal satisfaction.

Pans at the bottom are preventative. Cat has used the stairs and floor as a cat box for a very long time. I'm hoping that all of my work eliminates and/or covers the smell where it may have soaked into the wood.

Also note the stack of boxes at the wall. Those are all various sizes of speaker drivers and my childhood stuffed bunny. Anyone here build speakers and need a shitload?

Decided an iPhone 6 plus is not worth the durability risk or monster size and cancelled my preorder. Not sure what to upgrade to next. Considering the Note4 but not sure if android will satisfy me. I saw the iPhones at Costco today and wasn't entirely impressed with them.
