Any ideas on how to battle epic insomnia?

I've found that if I have caffeine after, say: 5pm, I simply can't get to sleep, and often toss and turn until 1 or 2 am. The effect is so absurdly pronounced that I pretty much never consume caffeine after lunch on a "school night".

I love to have a jack and coke about once a week in the evenings - unfortunately, the alcohol wears off long before the caffeine does. The result was that I now stock caffeine free coke in the house. I recently was at a hotel for (legitimate) work for about a week, and on one of the nights I figured I'd have a jack and coke and relax for the evening. It wasn't until about 1:30 am that I realized that I had forgotten the caffeine thing. (Context: if you are "ordering" such a drink anywhere, chances are that they don't keep any sort of caffeine free cola. This, to me, is a major failure in the jack and coke industry - far larger a failure than those that substitute pepsi for coke; and I'm generally a Pepsi guy if I'm consuming just the cola.)

The second culprit that I found was of course, sugar. I can usually consume about half of a coke worth of sugar (see: jack and coke) without any issues, but if instead I eat a bowl of ice cream in the evenings, then I'm pretty much screwed until 11pm or midnight.

This all comes from a guy (myself) who used to swear that caffeine and sugar didn't affect him.

It's probably pointless for me to talk to this though, nearly everyone that's ever complained about this to me says that they can drink a cup of coffee or a mountain dew before bed, no problem, so this obviously doesn't apply to them, right? It's strange that nearly everyone that's ever complained to me about it admittedly consumes large amounts of caffeine in the evenings...

Yay, Corey's back!

Trackday, bro?

Yay, Troy's back!

If you have insomnia, try putting your damn engine together and put it back in your car! At least start assembling it...

Or at least try reading the Chilton's from front to back in one go.

A dyslexic and agnostic insomniac stayed up all night pondering the existence of a dog.

Yesterday I borrowed my Dads truck to drive to Sacramento. He assured me that it was good to go and had no issues. 75 miles into the trip I stopped for gas and checked the oil because that's the kind of guy I am. It took 3 quarts to get on the stick, the engine takes 6 on a change.

Trust but verify

no television or computers within an hour of your desired bed time. Then read until you can't hold your eyes open. it works for most people I know that have trouble with insomnia.

I have no idea how we didn't blow the motor driving over Pacheco Pass at highway speed in 95° heat. The motor was MUCH quieter after adding oil Of course, now the dipstick stinks, I couldn't possibly imagine why...

This. I discovered this WAY too late in life. If you have a TV in the bedroom, get rid of it. Turn off the extraneous stimuli and let your brain ramp down for an hour or more before trying to go to bed. If you see me posing on here after 10pm you know I'm going to have a bad night.
If I fill my truck up to the full line it pukes out of the dipstick until its below the line. Pretty fun in front of pruiss uphill.
Funny. If I read before bed I can stay up all night
TV knocks me out in half an hour

That's because you have an FE series big block. The oil system in that motor runs on hopes/dreams/magic. Most guys end up overfilling by a quart because the drain back from the heads is so terrible. How much blow by do you have?

TV ruins me, couldn't say why. It's probably different for different people and depends on the content.

I use this on my Work & Home PCs, and on my android phone.

Great for daily use, reduces my eye strain staring at small text all day.

Auto adjusts during the day using your zip code.

Blue light disrupts the body's release of melatonin, thus keeping you from going night-night.

Probably an insane amount. I pretty much just put a quart in every time I put gas in it and burn the extra off on my headers out the dipstick. I may pull the engine this winter now that I have a good shop. Or I will sack up and buy a 7.3 like I originally planned.

Having 750sq/ft of shop space under my house is going to be pretty cool.

Don't know how you people survive on that. If I'm not asleep by 11pm something is weird. 8 hours is my norm.

5am crew practice for 3 years drilled early bedtimes into me pretty soon.
