In totally unrelated news, I managed to tear up my ACL and meniscus on my right knee today.

I have an entire string of Christmas lights for which all the filaments spontaneously combusted. There are three strings of lights plugged into a congested outlet. Every bulb on the first string is black today. The second and third string still light up perfectly. What the hell happened (besides self-implosion due to lights still being on mid-January)?

I could not get out from under the bike in time, crashed down on my knee as my body was rotating.

The mini bulbs apparently have an internal shunt in them for when the filament burns up. The shunts appear to have significantly less resistance than the filament, so if you lose enough filaments, the entire string will burn up.

as to what caused it, bulb tolerance and a voltage swell/transient?

Did the fuse blow? I am assuming the string is fused.

7:00pm: Feels fine. Gives me the go-ahead to jack up her car and install hitch wiring.
7:30pm: says we need to go NOW, zip tie wires to a control arm and go. She's pissed that I took the time to wash my hands.

I'm about this far |___| from just coming into the TV station at 1am on a Caturday and cutting every single god-damned cable in the entire rack room that doesn't have a clearly-readable label on it which says what the cable is supposed to be plugged into, where the other end of the cable is, and what signal is on it.

I don't miss working in networking closet's at al. Figuring out thousands of unlabeled wires is a PITA.

No, I am not. Hence Caturday at 1am, one of the few times when no IBEW personnel are in the building.



This isn't some cramped wiring closet. It's a large equipment room with about 70 racks, sitting on raised floor (only about 5" deep), with very easy access to everything.

Problem is, there are so damned many abandoned cables in the facility that there are some parts of the floor which are totally full. And since so much stuff isn't labeled, you have no idea of knowing whether any given circuit is still relevant, or whether it can come out.

I'd estimate that probably 50% of the cabling in that room is useless, and probably 20% of the equipment isn't doing anything any more.

I have assigned two of my guys, the ones who have been around the longest and are therefore responsible for most of this mess, to spend literally every free moment they have for the foreseeable future to tracing down and eliminating every single cable and piece of equipment that isn't doing something useful.

They're going to learn how much it sucks to leave unlabeled and undocumented wires lying around.




And don't even get me started on the wiring closets... This is what was considered to be acceptable when I first got here:

I designated a specific closet near the rack room to be the depository for all removed cable. When the pile grows to a certain height, I order a rubbish bin from the building to have it hauled off. This way I get to monitor the rate at which the pile rises.

 

I can already see a substrate of empty cardboard boxes, thinly veiled by a few random cable coils.

There's your 3' pile...

 

I am on strange pain meds till surgery, scheduled for the 20th.

Severed ACL, hyperextended medial ligament, absolutely decimated meniscus, and one depression fracture.

One month of rehab, no driving till then. (I purposely left the bike out of that particular conversation - if t is not mentioned, it can't be on the no no list)

Good thing we have killer insurance. They are covering every dime. No co-pay.
