The show Punked is honestly the least funny prank show I've ever seen. Nothing on it is funny. I kinda hope the guy gets stabbed, like that one on the cheating girlfriend prank show.

That's another thing, very unfunny concepts that make it to TV. The only worthwhile thing on that show (The cheating girlfriend one) is that one big buff badass (Herp derp) got so pissed at the prank (He didn't know it was a prank at the time) That he pulled out a knife and stabbed the guy in the stomach. What the fuck did the guy expect? What a 'tard.

In other news, I'm watching to catch a predator

I just bought a 42" Panasonic Plasma TV. Does anyone here notice flickering in the whites of a Plasma when not looking directly at the screen?

I notice it even when looking directly at it, always towards the periphery of my vision. I'm thinking this is like how some people are sensitive to the rainbow effect on DLP displays.

Bryce 09-18-2010 02:25 AM

God Dammit. I found a dead pixel. Well not completely dead. Blue doesn't work on it.

What is the refresh rate of the tv? 60hz?

I have a 42" Panasonic plasma in the bedroom and a 46" Panasonic plasma in the living room, and I haven't noticed any flickering on either.

If your screen doesn't have a rigid layer on it you can usually massage it till it works again. Worked for me several times in the past.

Be careful though, because sometimes massaging it makes it rigid...

:giggle:

I had no luck massaging out a stuck pixel (is what this is in your case) from my 24'' Samsung LCD computer monitor. Fortunately it is a blue pixel and can only really be seen on black backgrounds. It's bad that it's pretty much in the middle of the screen though, but I deal with it because the other 99.9% of the monitor kicks ass. I tried every stuck pixel trick I could find on the internet.

rider384 09-18-2010 05:31 PM

600 HZ, although that's just due to the nature of PDPs, the true refresh rate is 60hz. You could say that they are quite similar to old school CRT displays, except with a much higher "repaint" rate. I did some reading and apparently 14% of people can notice the flickering. I must be in the 14%. I also noticed a rainbow effect when running a THX calibration dvd, but I'm not sensitive to rainbows on my DLP unless I'm purposefully trying to notice it.

Rubbing Plasmas won't do a thing, they're made of glass, lol. Dead blue pixel is still there, but I've come to realize that it is impossible to notice unless I'm about a foot from the screen, displaying a wholly blue screen. Oh the joys of 1080P.

It's been running break in images from here (http://www.eaprogramming.com/) for the past 25 hours now. I watched a movie today! It was a DVD of "The Final Countdown". Lots of F-14's and Corsairs in it. OK movie, cool footage of jets though. This TV is amazing.

I must say that I did not notice any flickering when watching regular content, only on the white and gray break in slides did I notice flickering. Last night I was thinking I was going to have to return it and get a shitty LCD, but I'm not worried about that anymore.

Oh yeah, it's a TC-P42S2.

Lol at this Mac failure:

ATTENTION MAC USERS!

The MacIntosh computing platform has a bizarre need to create two separate files when saving onto a non-Mac formatted disk or drive: one is a data fork, and the other a resource fork. Rather than explain why this is a dumb way to design a file system, I'll cut to the chase: as with pretty much every other electronic device in the non-Mac world, your plasma TV can only understand data forks, not resource forks.

And use a proper 6 point wrench or socket next time to avoid stripping them. Adjustable wrenches are fail.

I was using a proper 1/2" 6 point wrench. I relized I stirpped it because the wrench is warped ever so slightly, allowing it to pop past the grip points. I would have used a socket but it was right under the oil drain, so there was no possible way to get one on.

Regardless, I managed to get it out with my angle grinder

Tuesday is my BDay, I'm celebrating by buying a 02 Honda Insight for my daily 140mi round trip commute to work. Should end up saving me up to $300/mo in gas, $200/mo minimum. I already test drove it and put down a deposit, gonna be a fun ride and should keep me out of wreckless driving speeds like I do now. Car will pay for itself in gas savings in less than 2 years. After I sell my current daily I will be netting that savings immediately since I was already financing a car. I plan on keeping it until I can no longer buy parts to repair it. Hopefully another 20 years :P

I've already researched the battery and I know where to source the cells, build a trickle charger for monthly balances, and what analyzer to use to individually rebalance and test cells for a full rebuild. Needless to say, I'm not worried about the battery pack costs.

Not interested at all in a motorcycle, I've already given a ACL, LCL, and PCL to the R6 I used to own. I'll stick to seat belts and airbags and still get my 65MPG. I don't see the Insight looking any gayer than a miata. Its an engineering work of genius really, even compared to current gen cars.

  1. Thats not a "celebration".
  2. It's not going to be fun.
  3. A poorly accelerating car wont keep you from driving fast. A car will not change your driving habits.
  4. That car is going to be boring as fuck. There are many better ways to commit testosteric suicide.

Having been the owner of a CRX HF, I know exactly what I'm getting. Thanks though.

neogenesis2004 09-19-2010 08:42 PM

Besides, its about the money...what other car will save me around $300/month? Thats like 1 Apple stock a month. In 5 years those will be worth at least 2x what they are now. Not saying I'm buying Apple stock, but you get my point. For a commuter car I could give a fuck how little power the car has, how much fucking power does a stock miata have...and how much times does it spend in turns vs in a straight line.

And as much as you might try to fight it, even with a turbo a miata looks pretty fucking gay unless its killing it on a track.

Relative to a 2002 Honda Insight? Well, a 1991 Geo Metro LSi convertible, amortized over 10 years. Costs nearly nothing to buy, nearly nothing to maintain, the battery costs $50 and needs replacement once every 5 years, it's actually quite fun to drive in town, and you won't need years of expensive therapy to recover from it.

Honestly wasn't expecting that much venom from a miata forum of all places...although its MT, so I should have. I'm guessing that none of you commenting on it have probably even driven one. It honestly doesn't seem any more gay to me than a miata.

Joe, I don't see how the fucking Geo is any less gay from any perspective.

Whatever, no love from the fagsquad. I can live with it.

It's nothing at all to do with gayness. A pink Geo Metro convertible is gayer than a bag of dicks, but it's a fun, practical, unpretentious car for sensible people who don't give a flying fuck about what anybody else thinks.

When you drive a Prius, you are saying to the world, in the most magniloquently smug way possible "I am better than all of you people, and you all ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Never mind that I suck at math, I don't care that I paid 10x what this car is worth and that it handles worse than the barge that brought it over from Japan, it makes me feel more important than everyone else, and that's all that matters to me."

When you drive an Insight, you are saying exactly the same thing, while wearing unfashionable trousers and a pocket protector.

It's just intolerable, and I hope that you die of necrotizing fasciitis.

Doppelgänger 09-19-2010 11:39 PM

Do you carry a pocket dictionary around? Your command of English vocabulary is above par.

If it helps the math equation at all. I'm buying it for only $5400 with 120k mi on it, still has 30k mi on the battery warranty. My trousers are unfashinable though, I just buy them on sale at Kohls.

kotomile 09-19-2010 11:50 PM

I like the Insight. It's a simpler car than the Prius (some would argue that this just means the Prius is a better hybrid, but w/e) and it has looks that those familiar with aerodynamics can appreciate. It's very much a fuel saving tool, where the Prius is a fuel saving fashion statement (IMHO). The Insight is also a favorite of the hypermilers, and with some of their "eco mods" they're recording up to 100 mpg, though this requires some unusual driving techniques.

I'd have an Insight or CRX HF if I didn't need much space, but the VW gets respectable mileage for a wagon.

I know a team calling themselves redlight racing stuck a K20 in one. Was like 200ish whp and they still got like 47MPG I think on the hwy. Bisimoto built a FWD all motor drag car with an insight using a F22, and making like 350whp. It ran something like a 9.2xx at 151mhp. With a 0.25 drag coefficient you can do some pretty cool things.

The seats in those are uncomfortable as fuck, IMO.

BTW - if you ever fly in a C17 (Yeah I know that's not a C17), try to snag the seats along the fuselage. The middle rows are just seats bolted to a platform that's slid into the middle of the plane, and they have about 3" of space to slide back and forth.

The local sports car club president back home brought an Insight to an autox and promptly owned 3/4 of the field of 50. It had slicks (idk what/if any other mods) and the guy is a ridiculously good driver, but it was entertaining nonetheless. Quietest car I've ever seen at an event.

I just sent this to my dad and wife. The story is that she backed the JSW into the edge of the garage and scuffed up the taillight a bit.

"Hi hun and dad,

I was browsing the web earlier and found this picture (attached), and it reminded me: Thanks dad for buffing the damage out of the VW. Hopefully it was as easy to repair as VW says it is ;)

Love you babe :D
