I dont do math like anyone ive ever met, attending public school in baltimore this got me in alot of trouble because even tho I'd consistently reach the same answer my "show your work" driven teachers would mark me wrong every time. spent many days in the office arguing with admin staff about this..

yay public schools!

A young boy went up to his father and asked him "Dad, what is the difference between 'potentially' and 'realistically'?"

The father thought for a moment, then answered, "Go ask your mother if she would sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars. Then ask your sister if she would sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars, and then ask your brother if he'd sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars. Come back and tell me what you learn from that."

So the boy went to his mother and asked, "Would you sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars?" The mother replied, "Of course I would! We could really use that money to fix up the house and send you kids to a great University!"

The boy then went to his sister and asked, "Would you sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars?" The girl replied, "Oh my Gawd! I LOVE Brad Pitt I would sleep with him in a heartbeat, are you nuts?"

The boy then went to his brother and asked, "Would you sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars?" "Of course," the brother replied. "Do you know what a million bucks would buy?"

The boy pondered the answers for a few minutes and then went back to his dad.

His father asked him "Did you find out the difference between 'potentially' and 'realistically'?"

The boy replied, "Yes, 'Potentially', you and I are sitting on three million dollars. But 'realistically', we're living with two hookers and a homo."

Also, if you buy an abandoned island somewhere, take 8 or so dwarf kids from birth and bring them to the island, and raise them to be you're servants and not teach them anything but that you are "god" would they accept this life and not think anything of it? Ponder that baby!

Please don't do what I think you're about to do.

(hint: your postcount relative to today's posting activity seems very suspicious.)

In every account of the 1979 incident at Three Mile Island unit 2, one factor which is consistently noted is the fact that communication between the shift operators and the outside world was severely constrained by the fact that only one external telephone line was present in the control room. Thus, engineers from Babcock & Wilcox, the NRC and elsewhere, were unable to communicate in real-time with the plant, to assist with providing remote diagnosis and real-time analysis of the condition of the reactor.

And one thing puzzles me- why on earth didn’t they simply establish a CO conference bridge?

These days, we take conference calling for granted. It’s a standard function of all modern PBXes and VoIP systems. And while in-house conference functionality was uncommon in the 70s, the phone company itself routinely provided conference bridge services. The phone phreak community of the 1970s and 80s were well aware of this, and took advantage of this fact regularly. In the days before web forums, Usenet or even FidoNet, pirated Bell conference bridges of epic proportion were the premiere means of mass communication within the phreak community.

So how is it that in such a massively critical situation, not a single engineer thought “Gee, why don’t we use our one available outside line to connect to a Bell operator, and then have them busy-forward our incoming number to a hunt group which redirects to a bridge?

It is entirely probable that if engineers from B&W (the reactor’s designer) had simply been able to talk to the operators in the control room early enough, and tell them “Look at the position of the EFW-12 block valves and check the PORV outlet temperature, you bloody idiots,” that the whole incident would not have occurred.

So, yeah. The whole future of nuclear Power in the US was killed because nobody knew how to properly use a damn telephone.
