Being poor sucks. About to take a girl out, in my stripped out piece of ---- Miata, because I lack a decent, clean, comfortable daily driver. "Please excuse the lack of carpet, stereo, some of the dash/console, the exhaust drone, the transmission rattle like it's about to explode, and the heat on your legs from the trans tunnel." At least I cleaned it up a little...

I'm lusting toward a red c-class I see on the way to the shop. Not sure I'd ever buy one, but I like the way it looks.

It's because used to want to be racecar, now need to be daily again. I had planned to get a new daily a few months ago after I thought I was going to have much better income. That didn't work out and mid way through stripping the ---- out of the car, I learned I needed it to do daily duty again. So now my next few months will be filled with plenty of carpet installing, stereo rewiring/installing, good condition, used a/c compressor finding, and some other loose ends. I'll never get away from this goddamn car!

Well, if you have the carpet out, and plan to daily it...pick up some FatMat/Dynamat/etc. to throw down between the carpet, or at least get Reflectix.

50SqFt Fatmat is pretty cheap (It was like $90 for 100SqFt), and it did wonders for my exhaust/noise/everything, and resulted in no more heat issues at all period. Now that I've thrown in a new set of shifter bushings/all that crap, the car feels and sounds infinitely better.

I was thinking about it. Being as it seems this car will never see the track use I want it to see, I should stop worrying about weight and stop dreaming about lap times, when the car will never see laps. Noise reduction would be nice, as well as heat. Shifter bushings would kick ***, but I need a new trans, so I'll worry about that first. If I was actually making power, this trans would have gone a long time ago. It has been sounding like death for several years now, getting worse every day. I would for sure like some fatmat on the inside of the doors to reduce the drum effect from my door speakers. They produce pretty good bass levels for 6.5" speakers, and rattle the ---- out of the doors and all of the loose, sloppy window mechanics. I'm thinking the most this car will ever be is an abused -----, maybe eventually sporting a decently built, high comp n/a engine, new paint, and some other little goodies. For sure want to still do the brake build I had planned, as well as redo the suspension again. I don't see turbo happening. It becomes more trouble than I'm willing to put into a car at this point. Even if I had another car for a daily, I still don't think I would.

Can't speak highly enough about the FatMat/Dynamat/etc.'s noise reduction and help with temperature (Remember, it doubles as insulation!). It's enormous, and frankly, it barely weighs ----.

100SqFt was like 20lbs, if that. Seriously, if you do it right, you might pick up a couple lbs at most when you remove the stock insulation bullshit which doesn't even work worth a damn anyways.

True. I removed 20lb+ of rotten, moldy, wet carpet insulation, and a bunch of the sticky seam sealer/bond that was sloppily applied during manufacturing, and was all over places it didn't need to be. So 20, even 50lb of that stuff wouldn't hurt my feelings at this point. I've honestly lost a lot of my passion for cars over the last few years anyway. It's been way too high a priority for me, when I have had other ---- I was neglecting.

Something else I keep forgetting I need is a damn fuel tank/pump access panel. Both of them are completely gone, so all that is between my cabin and the outside is the fuel tank itself, and a thin piece of carpet behind the seats. LOT of noise from there. I'd also like to close in those pass throughs between the cabin and the trunk. I get a lot of drone from there. The spare tire well acts like a big woofer vibrating with the muffler right under it, and you can feel the pulses resonating from the trunk area. I'm guessing fatmat there would help a ton too, as well as maybe some undercoating. I also want a hardtop, but finding one, and affording one is tricky. I haven't seen one come up for sale anywhere in my area, ever, before it's already sold. No idea how I'm going to get one.

Here's my (very incomplete) documentation on it: https://www.miataturbo.net/showpost....5&postcount=13

I wouldn't bother with any undercoating really unless you meant it for rust prevention based on my own experience with the stuff. After new tranny bushings/rubbers/etc., it really made everything suddenly come together.

I purchased 100SqFt in total, dedicated half to the Miata.

Of the 50SqFt I dedicated to it, I used 30-35SqFt. But that includes trunk and single-layering every single bit of the cabin. 50SqFt is enough to do your doors, and double-layer the tranny tunnel with some left over to spare while covering every square inch of the car - including trunk.

Nice. I was expecting it to take more. I will most definitely do that. The more i think about it, the more I want it a bit more quiet and cool. MY leg ------- cooks with my exhaust being right there, and with the trans (probably running dry at this point, I don't care) smoking hot itself.

In all seriousness, it's the second best mod I've done to the Miata - the only better mod is my turbo.

And the weight is negligible, maybe a few pounds more than all the sound dampening ---- you remove anyways with a huge benefit.

I'd really like to get some on my firewall. Which the dash needs to come out for the carpet anyway, so that should be no issue.
