get the special offers one. it's not even as intrusive as giving away $1, let alone 20.

also every once in a while they have seriously good amazon deals on the off-screen.

I love my kindle.

I look back at what I read in a year since I got it compared to before and it's like I was some sort of illiterate *******.

edit since two posts popped up while I was typing this one:

if you damage your kindle, there is a very good chance that amazon will simply replace it for free just because you asked nicely and told them it was an accident. and if not, it's fairly cheap.
Thanks for the info. So the paperwhite is "better" in a sense that it's easier/more pleasurable to read?

I'm liking the idea that I can pirate...err...find e-books online and force my kindle into submission to make them work.

Now, when you buy a kindle e-book from Amazon, is it yours or is it merely rented forever?

Two things:

1: It is backlit. It's not an awesome backlight, but it works.
2: The background (paper) is somewhat whiter than the older models, which are more of a light grey. I personally can't say either one is better (just like some books are printed on paper which is a brighter white than others.)

There has been some degree of debate on this topic in the past, and it's still not totally clear.

In theory, the books are yours. You can "loan" them to others, but they are definitely DRM protected. (DRM, of course, is a joke. But that's a different matter.) Amazon's official Terms of Service agreement grant customers the right to keep a “permanent copy of the applicable digital content.”

In practice, there was a huge kerfuffel several years ago when it was realized that Amazon did not, in fact, have the rights to distribute a number of George Orwell novels (including Animal Farm and 1984), and Amazon subsequently deleted them from the Kindles of everyone who had purchased and downloaded them and issued refunds. They didn't ask the users' permission, they just remotely deleted the books.

Obviously, a lot of folks were quick to draw the obvious parallels to Big Brother and the Memory Hole here.

So, long story short: nothing which you "purchase" from any vendor on any cloud-based service can ever be considered to be totally secure. This is why you strip the DRM off of it and make backup copies outside of the official service.

Some things to note about kindle usage when it comes to keeping books on them:

1. whatever you buy and download remains on the kindle until you decide to remove it.

1b. whatever account you happen to have signed into on the kindle and associated books you have downloaded from that account remain on the kindle until you decide to remove them.

1c. you can sign in and out of any amazon account you want and download the account's books to your kindle whenever the hell you feel like it.

1d. changing accounts does not force you to delete stuff

2. library books can only be read during the checkout period. once they expire, they can't be used anymore.

3. you can email or push other types of documents to your kindle for later reading. typically this results in an unreadable piece of crap on your kindle, but you can do it.

4. if you choose to "sync the last page read" on books that exist on someone elses account that they are currently reading, **** gets fucked up and you and account holder the other will be fighting each other. just turn off sync page read and deal with it.

So I'm working on my car and the motor mounts were ripped so Im now installing so new ones. Before the motor was sorta level from side to side, now on the reinstall the motor is tilting heavily to the passenger side. What did I do wrong? It looks like all the marks from the previous set line up with where the new set sits.

Turns out my wife bought the SX230 for her parents some previous christmas, I played with it last weekend and it was nice. Prime'd the 260 from Amazon Monday. $6 more than B&H but with a definite delivery date and tracking. I went with the SX260 because of the current SX280 video/battery 'issue', and this new camera will be used often for video.

I saw, I considered it. That A2300 is much better than what I have been using.

Fine.

It said if you're married in a state where it's legal, then the fed gov will reck-o-nize and give you the same fed benefits the *****-vag crew gets.

It also said that dickbags can't act in the stead of the state if the state chooses not to enforce a law. and aforementioned dickbags can't appeal a circuit court's decision (e.g. that prop 8 is unconstitutional) to the higher court like the supremes.

what is not clear is if homophobe states will be required to have reciprocity for the federal requirements. i.e. if adam and steve get married in DC and move to varginia, do they still reap the federal level marriage benefits in spite of the local state laws.

(this is heavily paraphrased, second hand, from a lawer who works on gay civil rights for a large national org)

My dad passed away last night due to kidney failure, brought on by diabetes and a history of kidney stones. He was 87.

He ended up beating the esophageal cancer that we thought would take him, and ended up living another 2 years. But his body gave out on him, and he passed quietly in his sleep at the hospital.

I am continuing my restoration of my camper, using dad's tools and the skills he taught me. R.I.P. Donald Archer Leete, 1926-2013

*****.
My condolences. Esophageal cancer took my Dad 2 years ago at 91. Everybody will tell you that 87 is a good run, which is true. Doesn't make the loss suck any less.

Finish the camper, or don't. Just remember, and smile about the good stuff.

Great way to honor him--using his tools. That's what I'll likely do but I'm not sure what a Whitworth wrench fits...

I'm starting to get those feelings about my dad. He's 80 and active and in surprisingly good shape. And some day I know that he wont be and ugh.

I can't help but read those three posts and think, "longevity risk." The youngest person being discussed is 80 and still alive and active.

In 1940, assuming a man survived childhood and made it to age 21, they had a 54% chance of making it to age 65. Basically a coin-flip as to whether you survived to reach full retirement age.

In 1990, that number was up to 72% for men. (It was 61% and 84%, respectively, for women.) I haven't seen more recent data, but suspect the percentages are higher for this decade.
