I also drool for Enve stuff. I applied for a job there a few years ago, but they weren't interested in my "skills."

Also, I just noticed the tags on this thread. I LOL'd.

Build your own for a fraction of the price. I raced cross on 1180gram $380 carbon tubs. A friend has about 15k miles on a set of 30mm carbon clinchers he put together with ebay bits for about the same. The name brand stuff is better but not 3-6x better.

Thanks, I'm basically in love with my road bike. I just ordered Zipp 202 outlined stickers for them, it will be cool.

I'm not sure that I'd ever build composite wheels. I am worried about strength and resin over-heating of the Chinese stuff. I could be convinced to buy R45 hubs and get wide, torroid shaped carbon fiber hoops but I'm a little concerned about braking. I'll probably end-up crit-racing on some 40mm tubs before my next trip to the hospital.

I belong on aluminum wheels because I live in poverty. I'm pretty happy with the Zipps, would still like to build a slightly wider wheel with R45s for daily use, after the student loan, after I fix the Miata engine, after the power meter. The problem is that I keep looking at Zipp 303s and boning up a little; its bicycle jewelry.

My friend melted a carbon rim up in Santa Cruz a week or so ago, on the ride I posted before Joe's x-ray pic. If I ever do carbon wheels it'll be with discs.

Sounds like a quality problem. Resin and glue should all be thermoset, I.E. does not melt.

I don't disagree. I'm not sure if he really meant melted or "rubbed through" or what. I didn't see the rim since another rider and I bailed on that peloton after they went to climb more, and we were smoked.

Basically, although lots of people have no issues with poverty or China-wheels, I'm only buying Zipp or Enve carbon fiber wheels. I like the data Zipp publishes heat and braking related info and I have enough metal in my arm to be paranoid about it.

Kinda neat- this has been one of my projects at work for the last couple of years... we jammed a Penske Racing Shocks regressive valve into our bike shocks.
