Stay on the street tires for now, you will learn more about car control. R compounds can cover up mistakes. I ran azenis for my first year and switched to R compounds for the second year. A little toe out in the front will make for a quicker turn in if you want to try that.
I think i'll try cranking my tierod out one turn on the street to see what it drives like in tight turns. By the end of the day, through all the madness of me trying to focus on what I was doing, I did notice a little more turn in might make the car rotate a little better.
I also need to practice rotating around a turn around because I pushed through both of them really bad. There is a bit of technique for those that I need to acquire. I noticed I could probably throttle through the corner instead of braking hard to cure my bad understeer. Not sure that is the fastest way around though.

I'll definitely be staying on street tires. I figure the Azenis' i have now will get me through the season and allow me to actually know what I'm doing wrong. I watched the guys with slicks and they appear to provide zero feedback. Plus the azenis are actually an affordable tire for me while i'm in college.
If you're running Azenis and you'll experience hot days, I'd suggest investing in a sprayer for cooling down the tires, especially on a long course. They tend to get greasy. Kumho MXs tend to handle heat quite well.
I ran horribly this past weekend on worn R-comps (treadwear rating of 50). Had to burn off the old hard rubber on the first few runs. I spun out just before the first cone (Capital Driving Club in the D.C. area).
