By max out I meant hit 80-85% duty cycle... I should probably clarify that. I was thinking about that earlier today.

EDIT: it's also more around 10.5psi

 

I'm hitting 90% DC on 460s at 15psi, closer to 240rwhp.

It's not uncommon for BMWs to end up on their roofs at HPDEs, especially the E36s. They are becoming more affordable due to age, and they appeal to lots of people including noobs. That guy had no idea what he was doing out there.

You know, I've spun my car a few times and seen several others spin their Miatas too, some even hit tire walls or harder objects, but our cars don't tend to end up on their roofs. I haven't seen it in person anyway. <knocks on wood> But those BMWs seem more flip-prone than most other cars I see at the track. I've heard it said that it's partially due to their engines being mounted pretty high up in the chassis, which creates a high polar moment of inertia once you get one front corner digging into something like a berm or tire wall. I'm not an engineer but it seems plausible that the design of the car might have something to do with it. Anecdotally, it seems like other cars don't tend to roll as much.

A student in the advanced group flipped his E36 M3 last time I was at VIR. For those familiar, it was raining and (surprise surprise) he got bitten by the snake. Into the tire wall and almost inevitably, like a slice of buttered toast, it landed upside down. If there had been a passenger in the car, that person's helmet would have been tested (no cage). That wasn't the only E36 totaled that weekend either.

 

I remember watching a spec miata race at lime rock and I saw a number of miatas flip throughout the race. I've seen a couple other races there but havent seen any other car flip lol.

smash the throttle and depending how fast your countersteer you may spin but you wont make it far off track.

 

Yeah I like hitting the gas to get out of trouble too. But when you know you're fucked clutch in...

 

...and i laugh at the track people who think having some drifting practice is stupid. Case in point. Like when I was at Road Atlanta going up turn 5 and got on the throttle too hard and stepped the back out. I wasn't bothered at all, I just layed into it and gave the steering wheel a french tickler and was on my way. I was more pissed that I did a huge drift on my slicks.

uhh... push in clutch before you get that sideways. Catching it early because you know what you are doing is always better than spinning and getting hit head-on by the next rookie douche at the HPDE. And you can likely keep all four tires on the track and not get reprimanded.

One problem the tard in the video had was that he stomped on the throttle instead of rolling into it smoothly as he unwound the wheel. Stomping on throttles and brakes is rookie **** that always unsettles the car. Smooth is fast. Not hitting the f-ing curbs is a good idea for tards who are learning to drive also. The last thing a beginner needs is another way to unsettle the car.

I always heard "If you start to spin, clutch in" from every instructor I ever heard. It allows the drive wheels to quickly match the speed of the surface they are traveling across to regain traction. But if you have no feel for the car and/or if you wait too long to react you are fucked no matter what.

The bottom line is the guy was an unqualified douche who needed to start small. Arrogance kills people and tears **** up.

 

Dont you have to have a certificate or some type of qualification to go Solo on the track?
