I do a crappy/quick job (doesn't look too bad in the end). Strip/clean everything. I spray the wood off with a water hose after cleaning. Let it dry for a day. Use some 250 grit dry sandpaper to get up the threads (or whatever they are called). Put some stain in a small cup and apply with a folded up paper towel (yes, that is what I said). The towel will start to disintegrate if you use it too much so have a 2nd and 3rd standing by. Let it dry for a day. Sand with 000 steel wool. Repeat.

Awesome is awesome, used it for lots of various applications in the past. And the paper towel method is actually how I stained my kitchen chairs as well. Thanks for the write up!

Yes, I'm thinking about it. I see a lot of people using those amputee arm brace things but they cost as much (well, within $50) of a SBR stamp. I wouldn't mind having one of the 223 versions (AK, not AR pistol) and doing SBR on that instead. This thing is going to kick like a mule and I think I would like the 223 better because of that. I'd stick with AK since I'm not a fan of the cleaning routine for an AR.

BTW, that is a common flash hider I see on a lot of these M92's. There is a nice muzzle brake that I will be using instead.

Those arm braces are a little too short for me. Plus, one of the main advantages of having an SBR AK is the ability to fold the stock.
I am confused by a guy with a V8 miata having a hard time with 7.62X39 recoil, lol.
Recoil is harder to manage in shorter platforms, I'll give you that. I think you actually made a better choice in caliber. 7.62 gives up a lot less performance out of a shorter barrel than the 223 does.

Yes, .223 from a short barrel does suck. I have not shot this pistol but I figure it will be a big ammo waster (spray and pray type shooting). I figure the 7.62x39 will be pretty rough to shoot as far as barrel. In the end, I'm just looking for an excuse to buy another rifle so I'm trying to rationalize the purchase of the .223 version.

BTW, anyone have a good source for super cheap 15 or 20 round double stack AK mags? I'm getting ready to start looking and want to keep the weight down on the pistol (no need for a 75 round drum mag).

It all makes sense now. As a pistol it is pretty limited, but in sbr form it would be a really nice trunk gun. You should get adequate minute-of-man groups under 100 yards, which is well beyond the range I would even want this for anyway. sportsmansguide had some of those magazines earlier this year, but I haven't checked in a while.

finally got my Witt Machine muzzle brake for my mosin M44, wow does it really make a difference in recoil. Its like firing a 16" barreled AR rather than a arm cannon.

I'll probably buy one of those Zastava things this week. How nasty is that handguard, ergonomically speaking?

The handguard feels right but I think you won't really be able to tell until you fire it and it goes flying out of your hands. I haven't heard anyone really bitching about it so I am going to assume it is fine. I've seen people put "vertical grips" (in quotes because they were at an angle for legal reasons - fucking BATFE) on them but I don't know if that is because they just wanted to play with something or if there was a real ergonomic reason for it.

oh sorry, I meant the pistol grip -- it looks like a shoddy compliance part
