Maybe it used to be that, had leather ones until my recent Allett sailcloth materialed one.... I won't be going back to leather.

PTAC Tac10 .308 Lower Receiver

samnavy 10-17-2014 01:19 PM

I knew that PSA getting into the AR10 business would be a game-changer. I've read a few reviews, and they've all been very positive for the money... currently not only the cheapest AR10's around, but also the quality equal of the DPMS production guns. Apparently however, PSA lost their fucking minds are are using some takedown pins that are completely proprietary to their lowers... WTF?

PTAC stuff has not enjoyed a very good reputation since PSA started selling them... early products were clearly bulk factory seconds from wherever they could source just about anything. I think they've gotten a bit better, but I will not be an early adopter of PTAC stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if the PTAC stuff is just the PSA stuff that didn't pass inspection prior to the roll-mark being put on. Who knows if that means that dimensions are out of spec, or rough tooling, or bad coating. For now, AERO Precision is the clear winner for AR10 forged uppers and lowers.

I've decided to put my AR10 build on hold until the industry settles out a bit and there are more options available. Parts (especially barrels) are plentiful and competition will be good for the platform.

Am instead going to spend money on a precision .223 build and 6.8spc hunting build. My R700 SPS will be up for sale when I get home in a few weeks... will sell and be able to buy pretty much the best 6.8spc setup I can imagine. I've got enough more money squirreled away for optics and a few other goodies I've wanted.

I just bought 2 ALG combat triggers with JP springs and the JoeBob trigger screws... $135'ish shipped for both. I'll certainly let y'all know how they work.

Picked up two new toys on Friday. CZ 455 .22 and CAI VZ2008 (VZ58 clone). Did a trigger job and put a Vortex Diamondback 2-7 on the CZ. Seems like a very high quality .22 thus far and they have a great reputation for accuracy.

samnavy 10-19-2014 12:43 PM

You will love that CZ. I've shot 2 of them and my guys that own them absolutely love them. My one buddy runs some crazy expensive ammo through his and shoots a single hole at 50yds. He's got a 20x SWFA SS on his and says it's just too fucking easy to kill anything he wants. He claims he's decapitated squirrels at 100yds and I have no reason to doubt it.

I've never been in the market for a 1911, but I always thought it was a type of gun you just didn't want to skimp on quality. I'd never want nor be able to afford anything custom, so I'd checked out the better production guns. Remington has a pretty good Mil discount that puts theirs at the top of my list for future purchase. They're damned sexy and second to Colt for quality of production guns as far as I can tell. The ones I've handled feel like sex.

I know what you mean. In my case I am just not happy with the level of fit/finish and reliability of 1991 models in the $600-$800 range. To me there are very few models I would consider. I don't think it's acceptable to buy a firearm over $400 that requires any tinkering after purchase, and that is the case with many mid-price 1911s (at least from reputation).

I however WOULD be interested in buying a truly high end 1911 someday. Something like an Ed Brown custom for example. To me the benefit is that it is a custom firearm from a well known gunsmith and would hold it's value quite well if I ever need to sell it. Plus it's kinda like jewelry. I don't know if I would ever carry it aside from special events which somewhat defeats the purpose but still - I do find some limited value in the $2k+ market.

Mazdaspeeder 10-20-2014 05:41 PM

Not to knock high end guns, but I don't feel they're worth the money for the average shooter and are similar to high end watches, better in every way but not that you'd really notice.

Even taking a $400 1911, most guns will outshoot the owners. The Ed Browns and such are ~$3,000 and yes they are better in every way, but many of those differences will make no impact on function. Furthermore, I can take $800 and buy the 1911 I did, shoot it, find the imperfections, and send it to Remington to have everything corrected for FREE. Even if I did upgrades, I can't see myself racking up enough to cost as much as an Ed Brown, and the differences are simply not worth it to me. Unless you're shooting competition the expensive guns are IMO just another dick-swinging tool for guys at the gun range.

On the Remington 1911 Enhanced, it's a great gun but Remington never really caught traction with it. I got it because it was a great gun and cheaper than the Springfield Loaded series, Colt, etc. I rarely see them at shops or anything anymore.

rleete 10-20-2014 05:47 PM

I shot a Kimber Custom (not sure which model) this summer. It was smooth as silk, never even came close to misfiring (even with the cheap ammo we fed it), and was accurate right out of the box.

I'm sure my friend paid a small fortune for it, but it was one very well finished piece of metal art. I was/am jealous as hell.

Fun Fact: I was offered a position at Remington R&D earlier this year.

Their gun "closet" would make most of you guys sh*t your pants and cry yourself to sleep for at least a week.

Built me a lower on a budget.
Got a stipped lower from a local shop for $50 (no transfer fee) and got a PSA "premium" lower kit with the milspec buffer/stock for $100.

Now just need the expensive part. Anybody found any deals recently?
I wouldnt mind picking up a used upper if the price is right, but it seems like everybody of armslist and gunbroker thinks their used uppers are worth more than what a new del-ton goes for.

Mazdaspeeder 10-20-2014 08:06 PM

How much $$$ will you save by building it yourself vs buying one? Nice piece man, I bought mine complete so I can't help with the upper part :-/

Monk 10-20-2014 08:09 PM

Sportsmansguide just got in a shit ton of uppers if you want something affordable. 4-pay has helped me by a lot of ammunition as a poor man.

And you turned it down!? Choke yourself!

Sportsmans Guide got quite gougy when things went to hell for a while there. Not sure I want to support them going forward. YMMV
