There are a couple manufacturers of reasonably priced rifles that are generally recommended when people ask "best out of the box"... Savage, Tikka, and Howa. The new Ruger American is quickly gaining ground but the others have been around awhile.
My Tikka is easily the most accurate gun I own, but it's also the one I shoot least often. It's got a great trigger, smooth bolt and great accuracy, but it's painful, loud and expensive to shoot. It would be a great gun to go hunting with if I lived in a wide open area or could go hunting without weeks of planning.
I shot a Tikka T3 30.06 one afternoon... great action and trigger, but the stock was pretty bad. They've become more popular in the past few years though, and there are a lot of aftermarket stock options.
I think the Tikka might be the smart suggestion since hes in Euroland. It seems like over there or at least in the Scandinavia areas they're priced like savages are priced here.
No experience with the p320 but I love my p220 in .45. Rated with the same trigger pull but striker vs traditional hammer. It has a great trigger IMO. Break down is real easy. Factory night sights are great.

I tried a Glock 17 and just couldn't get comfortable with the grip. My fingers just didn't fall where the contours are and the back of the grip seems too aggressive to me. The P320 felt good and I like the modularity of it (although not sure if I'd use that part of it).

I originally wanted a 1911 but a LGS showed me how easy the Sigs breakdown.
I purchased mine chambered in 22lr and then bought the .45 slide and barrel. For some reason, it is cheaper that way (sig loophole).
The p226 and p229 offer even greater caliber choices.
I had an older Colt 1911 that I sold a few years ago that i'd bought off a family member. Nice gun and tons of stuff available for it but it was heavy (at least to me) so I decided to go with the newer tech. Ordered the P320 (backordered).
I feel like this is somewhere in this thread but I am not going to search through it all. I just started trap shooting with some friends and I wanted to know the best place to get 12 gauge shells with a target load. Max FPS allowed is 1250 ft/sec. Recommendations for specific ammo is also welcome. Figured the cheapest box for target shooting would be fine but I could very well be wrong on that.
Walmart is always going to be the cheapest place for 100ct boxes of Winchester Super Target. You typically want 7.5shot Heavy Target Load. 8shot is also fine. Be careful not to pick up any "lite loads" or "steel target loads"... the boxes are almost identical. Just be sure it says "heavy target load". If a Dicks is closer, Estate is usually the same price.

Have you tried the Springfield XD series?
At 5'8" I have kind of small hands for a guy and found the Springfields way more comfortable than my LEO Brothers Glocks.

Not to shoot. Handled one at the shop and liked the fact you needed to fully have your hand on the grip to fire it but wanted a longer barrel. 9mm is 4" barrel unless I missed something.
XDm 9mm compact (3.8" barrel) owner here, with small hands. Sig P320 felt significantly better in every respect and grip seemed very similarly sized. Caveat: only handled at shop.

You might also look at the S&W M&Ps... variable grip size with inserts, 1911 grip angle, and lower bore axis than Springfield or Sig. 4.25" in standard size, or 5" in 'Pro' model.
I own a S&W M&P9. It was my first handgun purchase. I held the XDm, glocks, and a few others. To me, it was the most comfortable gun to hold. So far I really like it but I am a lot less experienced than most of you.
