Guess I ought to get used to my new gun. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1acb67bb47.jpg In all seriousness, I've always wanted a CZ. Finally found one I wanted in stock somewhere when I was in the market. |
Where are you guys buying ammo these days? The places I used to buy it in person are out (Walmart, Rural King) and Sportsman's Guide is out of stock on almost everything. I see Cheaper Than Dirt still has some availability. Are there better choices before I mash the buy button? Mostly looking for range ammo and haven't bought in several years.

I dug all my reloading gear out at the start of the recent 'troubles', and fortunately had a couple thousand primers leftover from who knows when. That's keeping me in .357, .44 mag and .45 colt. I can load .45 acp if I need to, but haven't been shooting much .45 acp lately. 9mm I'm just not shooting right now... can't replace it for sane prices. Recently picked up some more large pistol primers through contacts from someone that was selling off a large stash... I'm also shooting .22, which I seem to be able to get somewhat regularly from local outlets. |

I'm not, everything is totally fucked right now. Prices and availability are insane and have been since early 2020. I'm not going shooting much. I have a stash of a few thousand rounds each the calibers I shoot but I'm afraid to use up too much of it.

My son Austin is part owner of "Gun Geeks"
Gun Geeks – Quality services for gun enthusiasts. He is BIG TIME into this stuff. He said prices are dropping right now. 9mm was 40-50 box 3 weeks ago It was offered at 35-40 box and selling at 30 last weekend... If you really want to sell stuff do it now... If you are looking for stuff wait another 6 weeks. It may be much cheaper then. He deep enough into this stuff that he recently had some 50 cal stuff that was worth $70 a ROUND! |
I'm in the weird situation of having enough cash that selling some of my ammo reserves for a few thousand bucks won't really change my life.
I'm also in the weird situation of not having enough cash that I would feel ok spending 900 bucks on a case of 45 acp or 5.56. |

Sorry, I spend more time on gun forums than I do here - I just assumed that everybody would know what the picture I posted was. Gotta remember this is a gun thread on a car forum. That's a Definitive Arms adjustable gas block for an AKM.
For those of you not versed on suppressing an AK platform, there are two main problems - the 14x1LH barrel threading is not bore-centric, and the long-piston design is overgassed from the factory for reasons of soviet reliability, comrade. Suppressing it makes it even more overgassed resulting in it spitting in your face with every shot as the excess gas blows out the charging handle slot in the dust cover. The solution to problem one is form 1 SBR it and just cut bore-centric threads in a more common western threading, probably 1/2x28. The solution to problem two is an adjustable gas block. The more common adjustable gas piston is not desirable because it just vents the excess gas straight into the action (and out the side, and into your face). Now you know. Note: there is a suppressor made specifically for the AK without doing any of the above, the Dead Air Wolverine. For a plug and play solution it's pretty good but it's a compromise, especially if you plan on shooting subsonic. |
I've suppressed a few AKs and I think

Thanks for the info on the ammo. I am still in sticker shock for the ammo that is actually available on ammoseek. I remember buying 9mm and 38 special for 8 or 9 dollars for a box of 50 for range plinking loads 15 years ago. Now I see them for 40 or 50 if available. Some calibers are completely unavailable or only have one choice.
Looks like most or all of my guns will have to stay in the safe for a while longer. |
Yup, I've let everything collect dust for the last 6 months or so. Probably should've sold a few bricks of .22lr if they're really going for $100

Supply and prices are recovering, but it's slow.

Is there any downside to plinking with .308 tracers other than the fire risk? They are cheaper than regular rounds right now. New brass, made in America. I think they may be better to the gun than Wolf or other eastern European choices.
|
Tracers sometimes are less accurate due to the incindiary material not always being perfectly concentric, but otherwise they should be fine to shoot. You probably wouldn't notice any difference in accuracy in casual shooting.
|
On the subject of plinking, I had been looking for one of the Savage MKII FV-SR .22 bolt actions since I didn't have a bolt gun I could put my .22 can on. Out of stock everywhere for months, and used ones are bringing $400+ on Gunbroker... for a rifle with a $279 retail price that usually sells for ~ $230! Nothing similar was in stock anywhere, so I broke down and bought a Tikka T1x off the shelf at my LGS. They have a reputation for excellent accuracy, and at least I didn't have to pay an inflated price... :p
Coincidentally, my club announced a .22 benchrest match series... so things escalated quickly from plinking to target gun, and now it has a KRG Bravo stock, and 8-32x glass... hoping to get it out to zero next week. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3a19de49_c.jpg |

But... who is buying factory ammo right now? By the Power of Greyskull, stop shooting for a few months and buy reloading equipment. The only thing you can't find right now are primers, and they'll be back in stock and at regular prices by late-summer. You must be mad to want to plink heavy with factory ammo? Are you made of money? My go-to .308 plinking load is LC brass and Xtreme 110gr plated (for .30 carbine) and some amount of RL10x or H110 or Win748 or whatever is cheapest for around 2200fps... 3" or so groups at 100yds and right at .20/rd. I could get that price down a little by just using .308 range pick-up brass, but I'm a snob and nothing touches my AR10 except pure Lake City 'Merica! Those 110's shoot better than PMC Bronze (the cheapest brass-case .308 you can buy) and do just as well as cheap .308/7.62 like Fiocci/S&B/WinWB/Magtech that costs $1/rd normal prices. I've bought PMC Bronze in the past few years at like $16/box, and it's my "break-in" and 'get on paper" ammo for .308, but it's total shit. |
I already have a zillion hobbies. Shooting time is hard to come by as it is; add in reloading and I'd never get to shoot at all.
