Does your Mosin look anything like mine on the last page? The PO put paint on it, and i'm afraid it's to far gone to sand and stain.

Thats roughly the red I had on mine stock, but mine was battered and crappy.

I just sanded the crap out of it and applied a high strength spray-on poly something or other, no stain. If I had been more careful, done a better job or removing the cosmoline, etc., it would be a real looker. Its still pretty good as-is. Pics in here somewhere.

Sand it down and see how you like it and what the grain pattern and color is before you for sure choose a stain. Just be careful you are not taking off so much you really narrow the stock. Between that and bedding the barrel on mine it hurts worse than many big-bore rifles I have shot with 180Gr Winchesters. I now have a full width screw-on pad for it, which looks lame due to the narrow stock, but really helps in actually shotting it.

Also, a nice light coat of engine enamel in semi-gloss black on the metal parts does wonders too.

So I just signed up to take my restricted and non-restricted courses (Canadian equivalent stuff). What is a good handgun to start shooting with? I don't want a rifle at this point, however I'll likely start hunting with some friends and find something suitable.

For going to the range with a handgun, I want something that is simple and easy to lean the fundamentals and a caliber where the ammo is not too pricy. What would you gun nuts recommend? I know zero about guns.

Ruger Mark II in .22 caliber. Get the longer barrel. Cheap, been around for decades, fun to shoot, and rugged, so it won't break on you.

I agree with the recommendation, but you might want to get various brands of ammunition to sample. I found that mine loves CCI Mini Mags and performs flawlessly with them. Other LR cartridges do not cycle the action consistently.

Granted, but that's true of a lot of different makes and models. Pretty much standard procedure to see what it likes to eat.

+1 to .22LR. I had a hell of a time with MKII disassembly back when I was a n00b, but YMMV. The P22 has a bad rap due to early production issues but the newer ones seem like they worked the bugs out. Any modern .22 should be fine out of the box. I have a soft spot for my Colt Woodsman, but that's just me :)

The idea is to get something that is low recoil, reliable, and cheap to shoot (.22) and then shoot the everlovingsnot out of it. This will allow you to get used to the mechanics of shooting without worrying about cost or developing bad habits like flinching. Lots and lots of proper practice now will pay off later.

Yeah, the Ruger MKII was my first gun. Not only will it teach you the basics, and you can learn about ammo and everything else. But it will teach you how fun it is to take apart and clean a weapon. Plus .22LR rounds are very inexpensive and readily available. Mine likes to shoot the CCI stinger rounds, more expensive, but man they shoot nice. I had some thunderbolt crap that would jam at least once a clip.

My P22 absolutely loves crappy Thunderbolt ammo. The problem is that it is actually more expensive than some of the other ammo out there and I normally buy whatever is cheapest. I did place an order two days ago for 5,000 rounds of CCI Standard Velocity .22LR (as well as 2,000 rounds of Russian 7.62x39 <G>). I've heard good things about it and I was looking to get a little more accuracy from my 10/22. Hopefully it will shoot with no issues because I will have plenty of it to get rid of.

If your guns don't like it, look me up. I shoot subsonic or standard velocity in all my old iron .22 semis, the newer High Velocity stuff can be bad news.

Really? Nice. That's on my list even though I'm a poser...I've only been to the range once, shooting my brotherinlaws 9mm stuff, and I don't even have my permit/license yet. 1911's look nice to me though.

Today's decree by the Black Panthers to engage in race-war against whites (in retaliation for lantino-black killing) really drove the point home that I need a carry piece. I'm probably just getting a M&P9c. Thoughts? Its it retarded to have two sister guns in the house? I really want something cool/expensive like a 1911.

I love the look of the 1911, but it's not very practical as a carry piece. .380 stuff seems to be the consensus for carry these days.

Nothing smaller than 9mm for me, that way I only have one ammo to buy. I'd still buy one of those CZ-75 P01s but I can't find them anywhere and I need to buy seals/gaskets/sensors for the VVT engine.
