Default Can't connect to MS after going MS-1 to MS-II

So as a few people know I upgraded my MS-1 parallel to MS-II and got an AbeFM PNP board. Everything is hooked up in the car, but 1 problem....I can't load any firmware. I have my coils unplugged, and when I turn the ignition on, the middle LED on the MS lights up and my fans run. If I try Tuner studio, I make no connection. If I download firmware, and then click on "download-MS2-firmware.bat" it gets to the part where it says, "pull the boot jumper" then I press any key after I pull the jumper, and it says "select a port" I select COM3 (I used COM3 for MS-1 with no problem...also am using USB to DB9 adapter...) anyway, it'll sit there for a little and try to connect, and then it'll say something like "unable to connect". I'm getting really fed up with this ****. Obviously the MS is good, cause the LED is lighting. I can't believe my laptop is F'd cause it worked fine with MS-1. I don't know. It could be a simple driver issue, or what the F ever else.

probably a driver issue.

I flashed mine with no problems. Are you sure youre selecting the right port?

Try moving it to another port.

Do you have megatune/Tunersutdio open while trying to flash? If ou do, they might be trying to use those ports and it wont be available for you to use to burn.

I don't MT or TunrStudio open while trying to do this...I'll mess around with it some more and see what I come up with. Thanks for the reply at least...

USB -> Serial converters use diff ports depending on what usb port you have it on.

Check windows device manager to verify which COM port your converter is using, If everything checks out computer wise you may have a hardware based issue.

i doubt its an megasquirt issue, unless you somehow damaged the MAX232 chip on there while you swapped for MSII

I just had some somewhat success. I went into Device manager once I plugged the USB converter in. I changed to Port setting from 9600 to 115200. Then I went into the MS Firmware folder and double clicked the download.bat file. It read and started to work, but then it gave me this error:
Erasing Page 0x39:
Erased:
ERROR: Stack Pointer out of Range, e=0xE3
press any key to continue....

At least it connects with the MS now, any input about this problem? I am so close to having this straightened out, I can hear the car idling!

When I clicked the download.bat file it asked me if the MS Boot Jumper was removed, and then it said if not, remove it and press any key.

At first, it needs to download the BLoader to the card, then it asks to remove it when you flash the actual firmware.

When you select "Upgrade from MSII standard" it asks to install it right?

Ok, I went in the garage and did it all over...I installed the jumper and went through the steps. It wrote a bunch of stuff and then asked me to pull the jumper, which I did and then press any key...
The last thing it told me was something like this:
Verification succedded...213 records total (8 skipped).
press any key to continue...

I pressed the space bar and the window closed.

Marc, can you post your MSQ? My car won't start with Abe's PNP board.

did you at least install a TIP120 in the idle slot? I know abe's transistors didnt make it through.

Ok, here's my most recent MSQ.

This MSQ is for the most recent Alpha code, 3.0.3, released on Sept. 12.

It may work with the older releases, like 2.1.1b, but make sure you check the log for incompatibilities with some settings.

Your car wont start without some transistor in there because the idle valve won't respond due to the lack of a transistor. You may need to head to radioshack/frys to pick up a Darlington transistor, TIP120/121/122. Any of those will work fine.

i added some info on my post above.

If you want to try to start your car without the idle transistor, youre going to need to hold the throttle open a bit to allow air in. If you try to start your car without your idle valve hooked up, you car will just die after it starts.

Cool, thanks for the info, yeah I'm heading to Radio Shack tonight and pick up that part.

Sorry guys, this thread was under my radar! Subscribed.

Note, not all serial ports work with MS-II, it's much more picky about which port to use. If you keep having weird issues (though it sounds like the jumper thing was it) get another port, the one Parallax makes has never let me down.

Interestingly, I loaded marc's firmware on a friend's MS, and, the serial coms 100% stopped. No laptop, serial adapter, or software would talk. I tried 3 computers, two serial ports, megatune, tuner studio, and everything failed. Car ran fine, but it wouldn't talk, from the second we installed the MSQ (I think we uploaded it from MT).

Reflashed the firmware, reinstalled the MSQ, and it worked. No idea why, but if anyone has this happen, try that.

Marc - could you post, in the main thread, the last MSQ you have for use with the "stable" 2.1.0 release code? Actually, swap the coil polarity so no one cooks their set up, then save the MSQ. We can post it in the main 'baseline" thread, and people will be able to plug in the board, d/l the stable version of the code (easier to find release versions), put on the MSQ and start driving.

Re: idle - you can also turn your idle screw! Actually, on your MSQ, I set the idle valve for 20%, then turned the idle screw till I was idling at 900. That way I know I've got the ability in software to change idle. If you have it set at 5%, you really can't make it lower in case you ever want to, or you want to do closed loop (for sure you'll want to be able to make it close or the CL code won't work)
