I run full synthetic in my miata, mobil7500 in my Protege, and dealer synthetic in my Mazdaspeed6. The miata on average I get around 9000 miles on before it starts to change colors, then I change it. The protege gets average of 10,000 before it changes colors, thats when I change it. The speed6 I get changed every 5000 miles per dealer, color changed or not.

When an oil no longer has the caramel color and starts to blacken its detergents have begun to break down and no longer is a good lubricant.. Which in 90% of vehicles is when it should be changed. I've followed that rule for over 10 years and have never found sludge in a vehicle I've performed that cycle on, nor have I had any problems. Learned it from my grandfather who did the same thing for over 70 years.

Oh, and I run Mobil1 in my Crotch Rocket (1994 600cc Ninja) which I run the everloving **** out of. Bought the bike with 2300 miles on it, it has 47,000 with the factory engine, gearbox, and clutchpack. Second gear shift fork is bent and the dog is cracked, but that happens on all ninjas of my model year around 12000 miles like it did. $68 in parts and 4 hours of my time would fix that. On average I change the oil in 15000 mile intervals on the bike, switching the filter out every 7500. Some weekends the bike gets topped out, which is 14,200rpm in top gear for nearly 10 minutes straight.

I don't understand. With this logic, shouldn't you change oil after every 20 minute session on the track? I'm not trying to be a dick, but I don't think the oil needs to be changed so frequently. I had oil analysis done last year after 3 track days, and a change was still not in order according to the lab.

Considering your sig, you know a lot more about this than I do.
