OK, so this is what i have gathered.

You can connect to your MS2 just fine with a serial cable connected to the stim.
You can connect to the MS3 just fine with the serial cable wired into your car.
You _CAN NOT_ connect to the MS3 via usb no matter on the stim or in the car.
You _CAN NOT_ connect to the MS3 via serial/usb connector in you car.
This does not matter if the computer used to connect is different.

Correct I should add when connected to the (different) car too).

Correct but it's via a Serial/USB converter, I don't have anything with a native serial port.

You _CAN NOT_ connect to the MS3 via usb no matter on the stim or in the car.
Correct, but on the stim, something is detected

No, I can connect via the serial port via a serial>USB converter when on the car

Correct.

hm... seems that maybe, just maybe the cable might be faulty. its worth a try. i know you are going to be looking for one to test. ill mull it over to see what i can think up. in the mean time, run portcheck.exe from here
http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms2extra/serial_setup.html

with the MS3 connected and report back.

Have tried port check on the stim, predictably it fails.

I can try it on the car at the weekend.

Good question, I've no idea. I'll check to see if its present or not.

If it is needed I suspect it'll be there, not often you hear of Rev missing anything!

Uh, sorry if this is a bit basic, but is this a new MS3 build?

Did you do the initial firmware install/flash before trying to connect with TS?

Just covering bases...

How pray tell would that be possible if you couldn't connect to it?

It is a new build, but I bought it from MSLabs, so it's all pre-setup. And I have connected to it when it's plugged into my car and when using a USB>Serial connector.

Tried a different cable on the bench, it worked!

But as is the way with me, the old cable now suddenly works too. ******* weird.

As with all things, never rule out the possibility that the simplest fix is always relevant to a large problem.
